While a student in the College of Nursing, he had an influential professor and mentor who called him out on his lackluster academic performance. He remembers that humbling experience.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was the typical college student, probably putting education third behind going out with friends and working,\u201c he said. \u201cI was in \u2018Adult Health 1\u2019 with Dr. Sharon Chappy, and she was very honest with me. She said, \u2018I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re going to pass this class, I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re ever going to be able to pass boards, I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re ever going to be a nurse.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That was the jolt a young Carter needed to settle down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThat was the final push for me, to buckle down and take this seriously,\u201d he said, \u201cand I performed much better my senior year and here I am today.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" aria-label=\"Watch a video where President of Ascension's Mercy campus recalls how he needed to get serious about his studies.\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/bZjGNr37wvM?si=vkiWzpOApXo7772f\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since graduating with his nursing degree in 2001, Carter has worked as an ICU nurse in the very hospital that he currently helms. More recently he was the vice president and chief nursing officer at Advocate Aurora-Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122452\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122452\" src=\"https:\/\/uwosh.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/ShaneCarter01-180x240.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122452\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-122452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shane Carter<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He returned to his alma mater for his master\u2019s degree in nursing, even having another class with Chappy, who is now retired as dean of the School of Nursing at Concordia University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carter shakes his head and chuckles, noting that he has had professional encounters with his former instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA part of me always wanted to ask her, \u2018Did you believe it or were you just trying to get me over the hump?\u2019 I believe she was just trying to push me and wake me up a bit. Honestly, I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d be here today if it wasn\u2019t for her and the College of Nursing at UW Oshkosh.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chappy was gratified to hear of Carter\u2019s tribute to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI am honored to know that a small part of\u00a0 \u2018me\u2019 influenced him to use his talents to become the outstanding nurse leader he is today,\u201d she said. \u201cI remember how proud I was to see him graduate and then was even prouder when he entered and finished the master\u2019s program. I knew he was honing his skills to expand his influence. I watched his career develop over the years; what he accomplished was truly because of his own talents and his abilities to gather talent around him. I knew he had it in him. I am honored to have him as a professional colleague.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Seon Yoon Chung, dean of the College of Nursing, echoed Chappy\u2019s sentiments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe fact that Shane Carter rose to the top was not surprising given his vast experience and contribution towards securing access to high quality health care in our community,\u201d Chung said. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I also applaud the UWO College of Nursing faculty and staff, who continues to work tirelessly towards our vision, to nurture scholarly nurse leaders who will revolutionize health care through service, innovation, and excellence in clinical practice. He grew up loving sports and playing sports. While at school, he got a job at a local plasma center, working as a phlebotomist and found that many of his co-workers were nursing students. They urged him to consider the nursing program, and so he did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was in a health care setting at the plasma center, interacting with the donors, the community, and I felt a little bit of the calling to be in that type of service industry,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He applied for UWO\u2019s nursing program, was accepted and never looked back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019ve been blessed to be part of something special, and that\u2019s health care delivery,\u201d Carter said. \u201cI don\u2019t think there was ever a time growing up, or even in nursing school, in graduate school, that I envisioned myself in a role like I am today as the president of Ascension Mercy Hospital.
