(UW\/Whitewater photo\/Craig Schreiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater hosted a record number of camps and conference participants over the summer of 2023 \u2014 more than 6,740 people, the most since the university began hosting campers in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, an estimated 7,000 people experienced the campus through large-scale partner events such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/news\/archive\/2022-12-special-olympics\">Wisconsin Special Olympics 2023 State Summer Games<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forwardperformingarts.org\/news\/scouts-to-host-over-500-band-students-at-the-whitewater-classic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madison Scouts-led Drum Corps International Whitewater Classic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UW-Whitewater\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/admissions\">Office of Admissions<\/a>\u00a0hosted 3,340 visitors on campus, including prospective students and their family members and guests, through 127 campus tours and three preview days. And the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/fye\">First Year Experience<\/a>\u00a0office hosted 2,445 incoming students and 2,638 family members for 11 different\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/fye\/freshmen\/register\">SOAR visits<\/a>, the university\u2019s registration and orientation program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSummertime at UW-Whitewater is a vibrant time of year when our youth programming really shines through our camps. In addition, future students and their families learn what it means to be a Warhawk, and get to enjoy our beautiful, park-like university,\u201d said Corey A. King, chancellor. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to be the reason that well over 20,000 people visited the city of Whitewater this summer to experience all that our welcoming community and our local businesses have to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it marks its 50th year, camps remain a vital part of the campus experience at UW-Whitewater. Of the many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/athletic\">athletics<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/music\">arts<\/a>\u00a0and STEM camps offered, several had record participation this year:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/athletic\/football\">football<\/a>, volleyball, boys basketball, boys high school soccer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uwwhitewater\/posts\/pfbid027xrYneE1LMJShYgsGE6Nh4wuC1M9mwVWHzG2rKfBG2ee3AZRKvszHz5KPeSom8fZl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jazz<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/additional\/gamedevelopment\/highschoolgamedevelopment\">game development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many other popular camps returning with high registration numbers included tennis, band,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uwwhitewater\/posts\/pfbid0QhWrdBD47eMuGsWnxKsZZs9GR3Vg83MFgKZAjihXZoTgYWLr6AP2kjaiJSxwsJfjl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gymnastics<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/additional\/collegeforkids\/c4k6-9\">College for Kids<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/additional\/grandchildrenscamp\">Grandchildren\u2019s University<\/a>\u00a0returned for the first time since the pandemic, and camps that debuted included a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UWWrockbandcamp.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rock, pop and music production camp<\/a>\u00a0on the Whitewater campus and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/additional\/musicexplorers\">Music Explorers<\/a>\u00a0on the Rock County campus.<\/p>\n<p>Inclusivity and belonging are part of the priority mission of UW-Whitewater; summer camps put the mission into practice by providing events like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uwwhitewater\/posts\/pfbid04aw5WH8VGkDkLXGXunJgXLsBn3tponY8V1cqg29LPZ7HyEfgsJKJQDEYnfFBBcGRl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wheelchair basketball camp<\/a>, hosted by coaches who are national champion team members, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\/additional\/chatter\">Chatter Matters<\/a>, a camp serving individuals who use assistive communication devices and their families. UW-Whitewater maintains a 1:10 ratio of camp staff to camper for all youth programming and prides itself in youth protection training for all faculty, staff, coaches, and volunteers involved in leading programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUW-Whitewater has built a reputation of offering exceptional programming, in state-of-the-art facilities, at affordable prices,\u201d says Morgan Anderson, director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/ce\/camps\">Camps and Conferences<\/a>\u00a0at UW-Whitewater. \u201cCamps offer spaces for kids to be kids, disconnect from devices, and reconnect with activities they love. Through camps, youth are developing life skills that will serve them well \u2014 long after camp is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the 2024 camps season will begin in January. Music, athletic, and academic events for youth are also held throughout the academic year.
