UW System on the Web

UW-Whitewater website offers slice of life

College recruiting meets the MTV generation in a new UW-Whitewater website called "A Day in the Life," a video glimpse into the lives of four undergraduate students.

The website, www.visit.uww.edu, a project of the UW-Whitewater Office of Admissions, seeks to capture the attention of prospective college students, who increasingly are turning to the Internet as their first source of college information. The site contains more than 50 video vignettes of the students, who comment on everything from Monday-morning Spanish lab to attending a "midnight madness" basketball practice.

A 2001 study by UW System's market research office indicated that 80 percent of high school students are garnering their first impression of a college campus through the Internet.

Other notable UW System websites

  • Portal Wisconsin, www.portalwisconsin.org, is an online resource for Wisconsin's arts, culture, humanities and history. Launched in January, the website is a collaborative effort of Wisconsin's Cultural Coalition and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts and UW-Extension.
  • UW-La Crosse Associate Professor Tom Volk has one of the hottest websites when it comes to fungi at www.tomvolkfungi.net. The site has received many honors and awards, including a "Cool Images Site" award from Science magazine.
  • UW-Stevens Point students can link to class and financial information and other important websites through the new "myUWSP" campus portal at http://my.uwsp.edu. While the portal is designed primarily for students, employees and alumni, anyone can use it to customize a home page.
  • UW-Madison has shifted to an Internet-based system to distribute student grade reports. Students can view and print official copies of their grade reports through the My UW-Madison portal at http:// my.wisc.edu. Students can also find e-mail, campus calendars and information about class schedules, tuition and housing through the portal.
  • UW-Superior's distance learning programs and online learning opportunities are housed under its new Distance Learning Center to provide a single point of contact. Visit www.uwsuper.edu and select the "distance learning" link.
  • UW-Richland's website, www.richland.uwc.edu, features "News Views," with photos and captions of recent campus events. International students have been e-mailing their families urging them to view the website to get a look at life on campus.
