UW System on the Web

User-friendly Transfer Information System clears up credit confusion
Transfer Information System website

Students considering a transfer within UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System institutions can now look to the friendly faces on an easy-to-understand website for guidance.

The UW System's Transfer Information System is a one-stop source for information regarding credit transfer among UW and WTCS campuses. The site was recently redesigned to improve accessibility and navigation—making clear what could otherwise be a befuddling process.

Advisers rely on TIS to determine how courses will transfer from one system to the other, and students can do the same. Among the site's features:
  • "Credit Transfer Wizards" that allow visitors to quickly compute how individual classes or courses will transfer.
  • Links to an extensive library of transfer resources and campus web pages.
  • Links to the institution-specific UW Colleges Transfer Guides and WTCS Transfer agreements.

Students still deciding which UW campus to attend can also find a link to UW HELP Online, which provides information about admissions, majors, programs, student life and financial aid.

Other notable UW System websites

  • More than 750 visitors look to the website at UW-Eau Claire's Counseling Services for support each day. The online self-help resources have caught the attention of counselors and similar services around the country, who say the site provides invaluable information.

  • UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard gives students a window to his world through his "Chancellor Cam." The in-office camera allows campus watchdogs to keep tabs on him as he works at his desk, and is an extension of Shepard's open-door policy.

  • UW-Madison's Center for Dairy Profitability and the UW-Extension Farm Management Education Team are helping farm managers keep costs under control and giving researchers information about farms' economic performance at the Center for Dairy Profitability website. The site displays more than 5,000 financial records from 1995- 2001, mostly from Wisconsin dairy farms.

  • UW-La Crosse's Murphy Library Special Collections needs help solving the mystery behind a film from the early days of the city. A university department found the 35-mm clip of an unidentified, World War I-era parade on La Crosse's Main Street, but no one knows why the parade was held. Special Collections has restored and digitized the clip, making it available for public viewing. The clip is just over a minute-and-a-half long. Library staff hope that someone will recognize the event from visual clues within the film.

  • Searching for a good book? UW-Oshkosh faculty and staff are helping to narrow the search by sharing reviews of their favorite titles. Updated monthly, the collection includes book reviews on a wide variety of topics. The site also offers a discount on reviewed books at the UWO bookstore.

  • The Swensen Sundial at UW-River Falls is the largest vertical sundial in North America and the most accurate in the world. The website allows the public to learn more about how the sundial works, see updated images through a webcam and admire the sundial as an exceptional work of art.

  • The UW-Rock County Foundation website offers supporters a wealth of information about the campus and its role in the community. The site outlines specific foundation initiatives, including 35 scholarships it supports each year. The site also provides clear information about how visitors can support the campus through annual giving or volunteer work.

  • UW-Stout showcases winning Web pages from its WebFair Summer Institute, open to high school students who want to learn about Web design. UW-Stout also heads up the annual statewide Wisconsin WebFair, which allows students in kindergarten through college to enter a judged web page competition.
