Brittingham Art Invitational II
Showcasing the work of UW System artists

By Kate Kail

More than 60 works by University of Wisconsin System visual artists are on display as part of the 2nd annual Brittingham Art Invitational.

The invitational features selected pieces of artwork by 44 art faculty and instructors from nearly every campus, said UW System President Katharine C. Lyall.

"The UW System is fortunate to have so many talented artists as members of the faculty and staff," Lyall said. "The Brittingham Art Invitational allows us to showcase their remarkable and diverse works for the public."

The artworks are on display through June 1 at Brittingham House, the official residence of the UW System president, and at the Office of the President in Van Hise Hall, in the heart of the UW-Madison campus. The invitational is coordinated by UW System University Relations.

The works are available to the world at a unique virtual art gallery.

The collection reflects the diverse issues that clamor for attention throughout the United States, said guest curator and Oshkosh artist Christie Charbonneau Wells.

"The viewer who takes the time to study and reflect on the works presented will be richly rewarded," said Wells, an oil painter and former curator of the Indiana State University Permanent Art Collection.

The collection includes a variety of media and stylistic approaches, including ceramics, drawings, etchings, lithographs, paintings, photographs, printmaking, textiles and woodcuts.

This year's purchase awards, which will be added to the UW System's permanent collection, were awarded to:

  • Matthew Bynum, UW-Parkside, for an elegant work in stoneware. Bynum passed away Sept. 18th at the age of 32. He was very active on the UW-Parkside campus and will be greatly missed by students and colleagues.
  • Pamela Schermer, UW-Milwaukee, for a brilliant painting titled "Bird Palace-Summer."
  • Max White, UW-Whitewater, for a bold painting titled "Hobo's Lullaby-Woody Guthrie."

Kate Kail is an associate university relations specialist at UW System.
