Milestones APPOINTMENTS Daniel Edlebeck, registrar, UW-Whitewater. Edlebeck was registrar, director of academic advising and project manager for the PeopleSoft student records software at UW-Oshkosh. Mark Guthier, director of the Wisconsin Union, UW-Madison. Guthier was assistant director for program services for the Indiana Memorial Union at Indiana University. Scott Hildebrand, director of media relations and marketing, UW-Green Bay. Hildebrand was Capitol bureau chief for the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Mike Rindo, executive director of university communications, UW-Eau Claire. Rindo was station manager at WQOW-TV in Eau Claire. Nancy Wilkinson, associate dean of the Graduate School and director of the Research and Sponsored Programs office, UW-Madison. Wilkinson was director of the Office of Sponsored Programs at Emory University. GRANTS Center for Economic Development, UW-Milwaukee, $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration to support the center's operations, which include supporting economic development efforts in predominantly minority neighborhoods. James Cook, UW-Stevens Point, $24,130 from the U.S. Department of the Interior for evaluation of three alternative fuel management treatments for Eastern White Pine; $14,500 from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for a study on the disturbance, structure and regeneration patterns in Yellow River floodplain forests. Cook is a faculty member in forestry. Robert Eierman and J. Erik Hendrickson, UW-Eau Claire, $40,090 from the Eisenhower Professional Development Program for their Physical and Earth Science Teaching Opportunity Program. The three-week workshop helps middle and high school teachers develop new teaching methods and materials. Hendrickson is an associate professor of physics and astronomy; Eierman is a professor of chemistry. Elvehjem Museum of Art, UW-Madison, $33,915 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to fund the treatment of ten Old Master paintings from the permanent collection; $17,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts to develop an illustrated catalogue that examines and documents the museum's Earnest C. Watson and Jane Werner Collection of Indian miniature painting. Edward (Jed) Frees, UW-Madison, $70,000 from the National Science Foundation to study Social Security and statistical prediction problems. Frees is chair of the Department of Actuarial Science, Risk Management and Insurance. Richard Hudelson, UW-Superior, $10,000 from the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, for outstanding new courses that examine the relationship between religion and natural science. Hudelson, who teaches in the Department of Philosophy, also attended a workshop on religion and natural science at Oxford University as part of the award. Gary Johnson, UW-Superior, $20,300 from the 2001-02 PK-16 Initiative: Professional Development in Instructional Technologies for Teachers grants program, for a study on "Act 31 Implementation Assessment." Johnson is an assistant professor and director of Indian Studies. Sue Kissinger, UW-Stevens Point, $5,441 from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board for environmental education outreach to Southeast Asian students. Kissinger is coordinator of advising and recruitment in the College of Natural Resources. Stephen Nold, UW-Stout, $532,000 from the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development Program to study bacteria that consume methane, a greenhouse gas. Nold is a faculty member in biology. UW-Eau Claire, $30,000 from Hormel Foods to help create the Hormel Foods Team Project Lab in the College of Business. The gift is matched by a UW System grant. UW-Madison School of Pharmacy, $1.5 million from the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation to establish the Lenor Zeeh Pharmaceutical Experiment Station, a facility that will allow UW pharmacy researchers to bring drugs from the discovery stage to formulation. UW-Whitewater, $72,000 from the UW System PK-16 Technology Initiative Grant to offer web-based educational licensure programs to teachers in library, information and instructional technology. Women in Business Council, UW-Madison School of Business, $41,000 from the Coleman Foundation for an initiative to help women entrepreneurs. Project LEAP will create advisory panels for established women entrepreneurs to help them grow their businesses. Scott Zimmerman, UW-Stout, $80,000 from the American Heart Association to research the heart's response to stress. Zimmerman is a faculty member in biology. PUBLISHING John Coletta and Michael Nelson, UW-Stevens Point, contributed essays to "Fifty Key Thinkers on the Environment," published by Routledge Publishing. Coletta, associate professor of English, contributed essays on William Wordsworth and John Clare. Nelson, associate professor of philosophy, authored essays on J. Baird Callicott and Lynn White Jr. Corinne Dempsey, UW-Stevens Point, "Kerala Christian Sainthood: Collision of Culture and Worldview in India," Oxford University Press. Dempsey is a faculty member in philosophy. John F. Kozlowicz, UW-Whitewater, intructor's resource manual with test items to accompany "Keeping the Republic: Power and Citizenship in America Politics." Kozlowicz is a faculty member in political science. Tess Onwueme, UW-Eau Claire, had her play, "The Missing Face," performed at Woody King Jr.'s New Federal Theatre in New York City. Onwueme is a professor of English and internationally recognized playwright. Jon Werner, UW-Whitewater, third edition of "Human Resource Management." Werner is a faculty member in management. Lawrence Wu and Barbara Wolfe, UW-Madison, editors of "Out of Wedlock: Causes and Consequences of Nonmarital Fertility," published by Russell Sage Foundation. The volume's 14 chapters are drawn from a UW-Madison Institute for Research on Poverty conference held in April 1999. Wu is a sociology professor, Wolfe an economics professor. |
