From The President

President Kevin P. ReillyDear Education Partner:

Thank you for your interest in “Posters in the Rotunda: A Celebration of Undergraduate Research.” The scholars who participate in undergraduate research at each of our 26 campuses further the University of Wisconsin System’s mission of teaching, research, and public service by discovering and sharing knowledge in a wide variety of fields.

Undergraduate research opportunities are beneficial for many scholars in the university community. Students benefit from a stronger learning experience when they link academic theory to field practice through undergraduate research. Furthermore, by offering experience and mentorship to these undergraduate researchers, university faculty members benefit from research assistance and fresh perspective in their own fields of study.

Undergraduate researchers in the UW System participate in projects that have had immediate, positive impacts, both on campus, and in local Wisconsin communities. Students collaborate with faculty to investigate problems and find solutions in health care, education, the environment, and biotechnology, just to name a few. By developing the ideas that UW undergraduate researchers encounter in their work, the state of Wisconsin may benefit in the future from innovative products, applied solutions, and new knowledge that can be shared to the borders of the state, and beyond. Without a doubt, as undergraduate researchers move into the workforce, they will bring the skills Wisconsin needs to remain competitive in a growing knowledge economy.

My colleagues and I acknowledge all of the educational partners who make this event possible, including the graphic design team at UW-Whitewater, the equipment assistance of UW-Madison, and the participation and support of our elected representatives.

I’m pleased that our University of Wisconsin System campuses have contributed to this successful event. Congratulations to the students whose undergraduate research findings are on display at this year’s event, to student researchers across the UW System, and to the faculty and staff who make opportunities like these possible. Their work is truly in the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea.

Sincerely,

Kevin P. Reilly (signature)
