2005 Program of Distinction

The following program met or exceeded the criteria set forth in the application, including broad based collaboration and documentation of teaching and/or learning outcomes.

MPS Design Project
Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Six Milwaukee Public Schools, and Marquette University

As a 2004 Promising Practice, the review committee was particularly interested in the progress made in demonstrating the teaching and learning outcomes of this initiative. The Title II funding, renewed for a second two year period, is certainly external recognition of the value of the program. The emerging evidence supports the assertion that students are being provided with strong pre-college career and cross-disciplinary experiences and the committee looks forward to following the progress and long-term outcomes of this work.

This is an interdisciplinary program for middle and high school teachers geared toward helping them meet new state design education standards as well as other curricular learning goals, expand their use of design and technology in the classroom, and build cross-disciplinary teaching communities within the schools.

2005 Promising Practice

The following program met most of the criteria set forth in the application for a POD, with the exception of demonstrated teaching/learning outcomes.  In several instances, the program represent recent innovations.  This program may have collected base-line data and/or have established sound plans for documenting future teaching and/or learning outcomes.

Goals 2000 and Beyond:
Collaboration between an Elementary School and a University
Great Lakes Elementary and UW-Superior

The review committee was impressed by the long-term history of collaboration between UW-Superior and Great Lakes Elementary School. The reading program described in the application is built upon a sound research base and the emerging data, though limited at this time, indicates that this initiative is making a difference in the learning of students. The committee looks forward to following the progress of this program and encourages the program to apply for a Program of Distinction award as soon as it is able to provide measurable evidence supporting these learning gains.

This program provides an authentic school setting in which university students can apply understanding of research based reading techniques and practical implementation suggestions in an atmosphere of support and continuous feedback.
