Antifreeze Recycling
How should used antifreeze be handled?
Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, a substance which can be very toxic if ingested by animals or humans. Used antifreeze, through contact with a car's cooling system, may contain traces of fuel, oil, and metals (including lead) which make it a potential hazardous waste. Solid and Hazardous waste management requirements as well as local municipal waste-water regulations are likely to apply, dependent on how the antifreeze is managed and disposed of. Antifreeze should not be disposed of on the ground or down a storm sewer.
DNR's publication "Waste Antifreeze: Guidance for Generators, Transporters and Recyclers" (PUBL WA-356 97) summarizes the solid and hazardous waste management requirements that apply to waste antifreeze. This publication also describes how waste antifreeze that is recycled is often exempted from certain waste management regulations. Several recycling options are available. By using an on-site recycling service, antifreeze can be processed for reuse. Other firms haul the antifreeze away for recycling.
May used antifreeze be put down drains?
Although it's possible to receive permission from your local publicly owned treatment works ( POTW) to sewer used antifreeze, due to the heavy levels of lead and other metals it commonly contains, discharging down drains is NOT recommended as a best management practice.
