Statement on Wisconsin Institute for Discovery
Kevin P. Reilly, President
University of Wisconsin System
March 16, 2005
"I was pleased to have the opportunity today to reiterate the University of Wisconsin System's support for the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Creating this institute is a bold step that can move UW to the forefront of biosciences research, and help Wisconsin increase its position as a global leader in these important fields.
"As president of the UW System, I believe the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery represents what is best about our great tradition of the Wisconsin Idea - creating partnerships among the university, the state, the private sector, and Wisconsin citizens to provide benefits for all. The research through this institute will assist Wisconsin patients and their families, increase the contributions the university makes as an engine of economic development for the state economy, and serve as a dynamic, interactive hub for collaborative research among all UW institutions.
"Engineers, biologists, chemists, statisticians, medical researchers, and their colleagues throughout the UW System will have access to the latest technologies and research support. At the same time, the institute will strengthen UW academic programs, provide students with direct access to top researchers, and ensure students learn in state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory space. The Wisconsin Institute for Discovery will also allow us to serve adult workers who wish to advance their skills for work in the changing biomedical industries, such as nanotechnology, pharmacology, and bioinformatics.
"The UW System is grateful to Governor Doyle for his efforts to strengthen UW's position as a leader in the biosciences. We look forward to working with the state to build the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and to support researchers from across the UW System."
