UW Board of Regents Approves 2009-11 Budget Request
On August 22, the UW Board of Regents unanimously approved the 2009-11 Biennial Operating & Capital Budget.  For a summary of the highlights, please see President Reilly’s Bienniel Budget Presentation.  Or, please see the news summaries of the August 21 and August 22 meetings.

The requests will now be submitted for consideration to the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the State Building Commission.

Guidance on Political Campaign Activities at UW System Institutions
On September 2, the UW System distributed updated guidelines on political campaign activities by UW employees and student organizations.  The document is available online. 

If you have a specific question regarding political campaign issues, please consult your campus legal counsel or the UW System Office of the General Counsel.

State Legislation Update

Speaker Huebsch Appears Before the Board of Regents Education Committee
On Thursday, August 21, State Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch spoke to the Education Committee in support of the proposed Western Technical College (WTC) Associate of Science Degree, a collaboration between WTC and the UW-La Crosse.  The program was approved the following day by the full Board of Regents.

Upcoming Wisconsin Primary Election
The Wisconsin fall primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.  A list of candidates on the primary ballot is available on the Government Accountability Board website.

► September Busy with Legislative Council Special Committees
September begins a heavy meeting schedule for Non-partisan Legislative Council study committees, which review select policy issues of interest, and is comprised of both public and legislative members.  Legislative Council keeps comprehensive online information about each committee, including membership, scope, minutes, agendas, etc.

On August 18, President Reilly testified before the Legislative Council Special Committee on Building Wisconsin’s Workforce.    

FEDERAL UPDATE

DHS and DARPA Officials Speak at 2nd Annual Resource Rendezvous
On August 28, the second annual Resource Rendezvous was hosted at Marshfield Clinic by the sponsored by Wisconsin Security Research Consortium (of which the UW System is a founding member).  The topic this year was “Connecting Wisconsin to Classified Research.”  Speakers included Michael Smith, Senior Adviser to the Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Dave Busigo, Special Assistant for Innovative Research and Technology Transfer at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  Read news coverage in the Wausau Daily Herald.

Bradley & Reilly to meet with Wisconsin Congressional Delegation
Regent President Mark Bradley, System President Kevin Reilly, and Assistant Vice President for Federal Relations Kris Andrews have scheduled visits to Washington on September 10-11 to meet with members of the Wisconsin Congressional delegation.

  • UW-Eau Claire: Dr. Paul Wagner, Associate Professor of Computer Science, has received a $404,305 National Science Foundation grant to develop portable and customizable software for hands-on, computer-intensive educational workshops.  
  • UW-Green Bay: The UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center is partnering with Prophit Marketing Inc. to provide the Market Forward Series on enhanced marketing strategies to business owners and managers in Northeastern Wisconsin.
  • UW-Superior:  UW-Superior has been selected as a participant in the Early Adopter Project and will receive comprehensive training and professional coaching in sustainability over the next year.

6 NSF Regional Grants Conference in Milwaukee, hosted by UW-Milwaukee and the UW System Office of Federal Relations.  NSF representatives will present information on Foundation, the review process, and cross-disciplinary and international programs.  There will also be breakout sessions with program officers from the NSF directorates and a session on proposal writing.
