"Charting a New Course for the UW System" Regent Study

Next month, the study committee members travel to UW-Oshkosh. On the agenda for the meeting is a presentation on the changing demographics of Wisconsin and how those patterns affect the UW System.

Upcoming Committee Hearings

The Senate Judiciary Committee and the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. in room 411 South of the Capitol on AB 444 and SB 214, which would permit concealed weapons. Please see the bill description and regent position attached. UW-La Crosse Police Chief Scott Rohde will testify on behalf of the UW System.

The Senate Higher Education and Tourism Committee meets on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in 300-SE to take up SB-209. The bill regulates athlete agents who represent student athletes by enacting the Uniform Athlete Agents Act. The committee may vote on SB-85, a proposal that changes membership of the Board of Regents by substituting a resident from each of the 16 technical college districts for the Technical College System Board member and the 14 citizen members and by adding a student member who is at least 24 years old. Earlier this year, the Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee amended a companion bill (AB 208) to simply add to the board a non-traditional student who would be selected by the governor. The Senate may adopt the same amendment.

The Speaker’s Task Force on the Wisconsin Technical College System has invited UW System President Katharine C. Lyall and WTCS President Richard Carpenter to address the committee about credit transfer issues on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The Assembly Education Reform Committee will hold a hearing on AB 503, regarding enrollment of the charter school established by UW-Parkside, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in 328 Northwest.

The Senate Education, Ethics and Elections Committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. in room 201 SE of the Capitol on SB 220 which allows a pupil who resides outside the Milwaukee school district to attend an independent charter school located in the Milwaukee school district.

The Assembly Public Health Committee will meet on September 10, 2003 10 a.m. in room 415 NW. The agenda includes voting on AB 104 that would prohibit cloning that would inhibit stem cell research.

New Bills Introduced

AB-497. UW (Jeskewitz) Provides certain orientation information to UW System students electronically. To Colleges and Universities. This bill was requested by UW institutions to facilitate the distribution of materials at orientation related to sexual assault and sexual harassment.

AB-503. UW-PARKSIDE CHARTER SCHOOL (Ladwig) Increases enrollment to 480 pupils starting in the 2004-05 school year. To Education Reform.

SB 220 MILWAUKEE CHARTER SCHOOLS (Darling) Permits allows a pupil who resides outside the Milwaukee school district to attend an independent charter school located in the Milwaukee school district.
