Legislative Update

August 8, 2003

Legislative Proceedings

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, the Senate is scheduled to take up Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of a property tax "freeze," which may impact technical college and K-12 education funding. The Assembly is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m., or upon adjournment of the Senate. If the Senate overrides the vetoes, the Assembly will consider them at that time.

Committee Hearings

This week, the Speaker's Task Force on the Wisconsin Technical College System met and heard a presentation by Harry Peterson on the Minnesota experience in the merger of Minnesota's technical college system, state university system and community college. The discussion by committee members tended to strengthen the mission differentiation between WTCS and the UW System. President Katharine C. Lyall and WTCS President Richard Carpenter have been invited to address the committee on the issue of credit transfer on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Upcoming Committee Hearings

The Senate Judiciary Committee will tour the UW-Madison Biotechnology Center at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

The Assembly Education Committee will vote Tuesday on the Youth Options bill (AB183). A substitute amendment to the bill is expected to be offered.

UW Day at the State Fair

The UW System hosted the 2nd annual "UW Day at the State Fair" on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. Campus mascots, advisers and exhibitors converged on the fair to inform families and prospective students about the UW System. Photos of the event will be available next week at: http://www.wisconsin.edu/statefair/index.htm.
