"Student revote sought on UW-EC tuition hike," Leader-Telegram, Jan. 28.

Some UW-Eau Claire Student Senate members want to revisit their narrow decision to support a $1,200 tuition increase before the proposal goes to the UW System Board of Regents next week. Senior Armon Tabrizi, director of intergovernmental affairs, said he's requested that the issue be brought up at Monday night's meeting because a Dec. 7 Student Senate discussion addressed specifics of the proposal, but not the application of differential tuition to hire staff.

"UW-Extension unveils virtual student union," Capital Times, Jan. 28.

...In an effort to reach out to its online student population, the University of Wisconsin-Extension is opening the doors to what it is calling a new virtual student union...The site is a pilot program that one day will serve all students within the UW System who take online courses. Currently, students studying for a sustainable management degree at UW-Parkside, UW-River Falls, UW-Stout and UW-Superior are being invited to visit this union/site...

"UW Oshkosh students fuel community intervention program," Oshkosh Northwestern, Jan. 29.

The Truancy Intervention Program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is not only providing volunteer opportunities for UW Oshkosh students but it's also benefiting children in the community and supporting a national movement. “The objective of the program is for UW Oshkosh students to connect with and provide support to high school students so that they stay in school,” said Pat Nichols, program supervisor. January 2010 marks the ninth-annual National Mentoring Month, which aims to promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations like UW Oshkosh's TIP...

"Longtime UWSP dean set to retire," Stevens Point Journal, Jan. 29.

Joan North, who for 25 years as dean has guided the College of Professional Studies, will retire this summer from that post at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point...

"Teaching assistants' union resists university's 'neo-liberal' turn," In These Times, Jan. 28.

Thanks to a University of Wisconsin-Madison budget provision permitting research assistants to unionize and bargain for the first time, the door has been opened for a major expansion of graduate worker unions at the school. The provision takes effect June 1. But UW officials are intent on slamming that door shut as rapidly as possible, in line with increasingly anti-union positions taken in the public sector...

"Bill ending banks' role in student loans stalls in Senate," Washington Post, Jan. 29.

Four months after it sailed through the Democratic-led House, legislation to overhaul federal student lending and channel about $80 billion in savings toward an array of education initiatives has stalled in the Senate...

"Experts say a rewrite of nation's main education law will be hard this year," New York Times, Jan. 28.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama held out the hope of overhauling the main law outlining the federal role in public schools, a sprawling 45-year-old statute that dates to the Johnson administration. But experts say it would be a heavy lift for the administration to get the job done this year because the law has produced so much discord, there is so little time and there are so many competing priorities...

"Obama to seek up to $4B in new education spending ," USA Today, Jan. 28.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday his administration will work with Congress to expand school improvements across the country, saying the success of children cannot depend on where they live. As he prepares to ask Congress for billions of dollars in new spending for education, Obama said the nation's students need to be inspired to succeed in math and science, and that failing schools need to be turned around...

"States collect information on students, report says, but don't use it enough," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 29.

States have made steady advances in building data systems that can track the progress of individual students from preschool through college and into the work force. But most states are not yet using that information to guide policies on improving education, according to a report on a national survey released on Friday...
