"Students offer ideas for Madison Initiative," Badger Herald, Sept. 29.
University of Wisconsin students voiced proposals to faculty in a public forum Monday on how the student services portion of the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates funds should be allocated...The forum served as a precursor to the creation of a permanent student oversight board which will hear student proposals for fund allocation and carry them through to the Chancellor’s Office for approval...

The Associated Students of Madison, in partnership with the Offices of the Dean of Students, held a town hall forum Monday to gain student opinion on the use of the $1.5 million in student services funds allotted by the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates...
"UW-L rally: Burning coal isn't cool," La Crosse Tribune, Sept. 29.
Some University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students want to kick coal off campus. Students plan to rally at 3 p.m. today to show their opposition to UW-L burning coal for heating. Similar rallies will happen across the nation as part of the Sierra Club's "National Day of Action." UW-L is among nine UW campuses still using coal, according to the state Department of Administration...
"Charter St. plant plans presented," Badger Herald, Sept. 29.
The Joint Southeast Campus Area Committee was presented with reno-vation plans for the power plant on Charter Street Monday night, in-cluding phasing out coal and utilizing more renew-able fuels...

...Alan Fish, associate vice chancellor for facilities planning and management at UW-Madison, also updated the Committee on the plans and schedule for the proposed update of the Charter Street heating plant...After the renovation, the plant will completely eliminate the use of coal and instead implement flexible fuel capability to use other sources of energy including biomass, natural gas and fuel oil...
"Sierra Club targets UW-Eau Claire power plant emissions," Leader-Telegram, Sept. 28.
The Sierra Club is challenging a pollution control permit sought for the UW-Eau Claire power plant...The Sierra Club believes the power plant should have been required to install pollution controls during upgrades that triggered stricter requirements under the Clean Air Act...
"Students awarded grants for entrepreneurship," Daily Cardinal, Sept. 29.
Four students were awarded the Student Venture Seed Grant Monday for their business ventures as part of the Wiscontrepreneur program. The SVS program will provide each student with $3,000 to help turn their start-up businesses into successful companies...
"UWGB highlights security with chancellor's walk, annual report," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Sept. 29.
New University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas Harden will take the chancellor’s annual campus security walk Tuesday evening. The event is designed to let students, faculty and staff walk and talk about areas of concern that could affect campus security...
"University to survey campus climate, culture," The Spectator, Sept. 24.
About 11 years have passed since UW-Eau Claire's last campus-wide climate survey, said David Shih, associate professor of English and Eau Claire's first Campus Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Fellow. Now, starting Oct. 5, students and staff will have the opportunity to participate in the survey, he said. A Campus Climate survey will be available for students and staff to measure how inclusive and welcoming the campus is for all groups of people, Shih said...
"Foreign study program in Scotland exposes students to photography," Leader-Telegram, Sept. 28.
Photography teachers see a lot of similar shots when they turn classrooms full of students loose on college campuses year after year. Such repetition wasn't an issue, however, in the seven-week "Exploring Photography" class UW-Stout's Nancy Murray taught this summer...Classes were held in a 308-year-old manor house, and the campus, in essence, was Scotland's spectacular countryside instead of the Menomonie university...

A university sounds the alarm before training for the worst. The public and media were notified of a training exercise at UW-River Falls Monday. The focus of that exercise was a mock shooting...

"NIH grants $45M for genome science centers," Genome Web News, Sept. 28.
The National Institutes of Health has pledged $45 million in grants to establish two new genomics centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), as well as to continue funding existing centers at Johns Hopkins University and at the University of Southern California...
"University of Wisconsin joins genomics center," Wisconsin State Journal, Sept. 28.
UW-Madison is part of a new Wisconsin Center of Excellence in Genomics Science, created through an $8 million, three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. Campus researchers Lloyd Smith, Joshua Coon, Audrey Gasch and James Thomson are joining scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University in the center, coordinated by the Medical College. Smith, a U-W Madison professor of chemistry, is a co-director, as is Michael Olivier of the Medical College...
"Vets waiting for GI Bill benefits can get emergency aid," Capital Times, Sept. 29.
Thousands of veterans going to school under the new Post-9/11 GI Bill will be eligible for $3,000 in emergency aid if they have not yet received their payments. As the Cap Times reported earlier this month, veterans locally have been frustrated both with the time it's taking the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to process benefits, and the lack of information available to those attempting to check on the status of their claims...

...So it is fitting that, now and then, a special occasion comes along to remind local citizens of the importance of this fine institution in their midst. Such an occasion took place Friday, with the inauguration of Scott Bierman as the 11th president in Beloit College’s history...

The most subversive question about higher education has always been whether the college makes the student or the student makes the college...Colleges don’t help to clear up the situation either, because they do so little to measure what students learn between freshman and senior years. So doubt lurks: how much does a college education — the actual teaching and learning that happens on campus — really matter?...
"Reading on paper or screen--Which is better?," Washington Post, Sept. 29.
A reader of The Answer Sheet asked whether there is research that shows the superiority of reading text on line or in print. It is a good question to ask today. More and more school textbooks are being put on line, the Kindle and other electronic reading devices are gaining in popularity and many young people say they prefer reading on a screen. The good news is that there is research on the subject. The bad news is that it is far from definitive--and, in fact, is seemingly contradictory...
"8 strategies for recruiting adult students to 4-year colleges," Chronicle of Higher Education, Sept. 27.
As the number of adults seeking higher education has increased, the competition to recruit them has become more intense. Although many four-year institutions have enhanced their outreach to adults in recent years, others are still wading into that nontraditional market. What are the keys to expanding undergraduate classes to include more adults? At the annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling here on Friday, Brenda K. Harms proposed several strategies...
