College students are appealing financial
aid decisions this summer in unprecedented numbers, an outpouring of
need that underscores how layoffs and pay cuts have battered household
budgets in the past year...Aid appeals are coming from across the spectrum
of salary and class. Students are appealing for aid at $8,000-a-year
state schools and $30,000 private institutions alike..
In an interview to be broadcast on the
Tavis Smiley program on PBS, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan predicts
that as tuition continues to rise, students will increasingly turn
to schools that are "smarter and more creative" about lowering the
cost of a college education...
Colleges and universities should keep students
who contract H1N1 swine flu out of class and away from others, federal
government officials said Thursday.
In their latest move to prepare for the possibility of more widespread
outbreaks this fall, officials said that students with flu should isolate
themselves in their dorm rooms or apartments, letting a friend or roommate
bring them meals and wearing surgical masks when they have to be in
close contact with others. For students who live two or more to a room
and can't go home, colleges and universities should consider providing
other housing where they can stay until 24 hours after their fevers
are gone...
College students should stop going to class
and even miss examinations if they feel symptoms of the flu, U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention officials told college administrators
and students today...
