"Start-up businesses 'hatch' in UW-Stout's incubator," Dunn County News, Aug. 9.

What do a solar thermal collector company and a Jeep center console manufacturer have in common? Both fledgling companies received assistance from the Technology and Business Incubator on the University of Wisconsin-Stout campus. The incubator is one of the Stout Technology Transfer Institute (STTI) centers, established to promote technology transfer between UW-Stout and industry...

"UW-L sports saved through community donations," WKBT-TV, Aug. 12.

Two University of Wisconsin-La Crosse sports teams cut because of a tight budget are saved. In early June, UW-L's baseball and men's tennis programs were cut because the university lacked funds to keep them going. Since early June more than $55,000 has been raised in an effort to continue both programs. Baseball raised nearly $39,000 and tennis almost $17,000...

"New GI Bill provides education benefits," Marshfield News-Herald, Aug. 13.

Wisconsin military veterans are receiving some extra benefits to ensure they pay little or nothing for higher education. For Adam McDowell, 32, of Marshfield, that's a good thing, especially as he transfers from the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/County to UW-Stevens Point to build his skill set in business administration... Under the new Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance or GI Bill, veterans can qualify if they've had at least 90 days of active duty service, were honorably discharged and saw active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, said Dawn Messerschmidt, veterans' advisor at UW-M/WC...

"UW-Stout chancellor supports regents change," Associated Press, Aug. 12.

The longtime University of Wisconsin-Stout chancellor is supporting a bill that would require regional representation on the Board of Regents. Charles Sorensen says the Chippewa Valley region has never had a non-student member on the board "for as long as anyone can remember" leaving Stout and UW-Eau Claire without representation...

"Giant UW-Madison sleepover to help renters caught between leases," Capital Times, Aug. 13.

  ...Wiatrak's experience is common enough that Associated Students of Madison, UW-Madison's student government, is starting a program called Move Out Night, to be held in the Student Activity Center. The event is designed to give students a safe place to sleep and a safe place to store their things during the Aug. 14-Aug. 15 "couch night" that leaves many UW students who live off campus homeless for the evening...

"UW-Green Bay benefactor Dr. David A. Cofrin dies at age 85," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Aug. 13.

  Dr. David A. Cofrin, a philanthropist and Green Bay native who gave generously to University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, died on Tuesday in Gainesville, Fla. He was 85..."Dr. Cofrin wasn't an alumnus, and hadn't lived in Wisconsin for many years, but you would be hard-pressed to find a greater record of philanthropy on behalf of a public institution of our size and relative youth," said UWGB Chancellor Thomas K. Harden in a statement...

"James Baughman steered UW School of Journalism through turbulent years," Isthmus, Aug. 11.

 James Baughman is stepping down as director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication after six years. And those weren’t just any six years. It was a period of tremendous upheaval for the mass media, with advertising revenue plummeting, daily newspapers downsizing or going out of business, and the Internet turning the industry on its ear. Has the UW journalism program kept up with these tumultuous events?...

The Wisconsin Alumni Association has come up with a way to turn your golden years red, through a new Badger retirement community. UW-Madison’s alumni organization has partnered with Capitol Lakes, a Downtown Madison retirement community, to offer special programs for aging Badgers...

"Man apparently leaps to death from David A. Cofrin Library," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Aug. 13.

A 21-year-old man died after he apparently jumped Wednesday from the roof of the eight-story David A. Cofrin Library at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, said Brown County Medical Examiner Al Klimek. He was a student custodian at the university, Klimek said. His identification was being withheld pending notification of relatives...

"Private colleges freeze salaries and slash benefits, survey finds," Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 12.

Two-thirds of private colleges plan to freeze salaries and 53 percent are cutting benefits, according to results of a survey released on Wednesday by Yaffe & Company, a consulting firm specializing in executive compensation and governance...

"Students are more likely to default on direct-to-consumer loans, Moody's says," Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 12.

Securities backed by student loans that are marketed directly to consumers carry more investment risk than those backed by loans marketed through student-aid offices, according to a new report by Moody's Investors Service...

"Sleepwalking students," Inside Higher Ed, Aug. 13.    

Stress about schoolwork, not rowdy behavior, is keeping most of America’s college students from getting a good night’s sleep, according to a new psychological study. The study, published in the latest edition of the Journal of Adolescent Health, draws its conclusions from a survey of 1,125 students between the ages of 17 and 24 attending an unidentified “urban Midwestern university”...
