"Northwest Wisconsin campuses squeezed by new state budget," BusinessNorth, August 4.

The 2009 Wisconsin Legislature and Gov. James Doyle brokered a biennial budget beginning July 1 that promises an austere time for the state’s higher education institutions over the next two years. It imposes $255 million in budget cuts over two years for the University of Wisconsin System, and an average 5.5 percent tuition increase for students on its 13 four-year campuses. UW-Superior’s share of the budget reductions over two years is $1.9 million. A $280 tuition increase will offset about $525,000 of the Superior campus’ mandated budget cuts, said Jan Hanson, vice-chancellor for admissions and finance...

"University Employees Begin Taking Furlough Days," WBAY, August 3.

In June, Governor Jim Doyle made it official that all state employees would be required to take 16 days of furlough during the next two years to help reduce the budget deficit. Many workers are already beginning to take those unpaid days off. "We could start taking our furlough days in July, so I already took one," Lisa Tetzloff said. As UWGB's Office of Student Life director, Tetzloff is one of nearly 1,000 state employees at UW-Green Bay figuring out how and when to take her state-mandated furlough time, but she says the initial shock and frustration of just having to take the days has worn off for her and many employees...

"University of Wisconsin System, union clash over access to staff," Wisconsin State Journal, August 4.

A University of Wisconsin System vice president has demanded union organizers stop contacting academic staff at work to discuss job conditions and descriptions. The union activity provoked an exchange of terse letters last week between Alan N. Crist, System vice president, and Bryan Kennedy, president of Wisconsin's chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, about what Crist called "unacceptable contacts with UW employees by AFT employees"...

Marvelle Brown gave 13 years of his life to the Marine Corps, a stint that included two tours of duty in Iraq and one in Somalia. The skills he developed in the military landed him a desk job helping veterans sort through medical insurance claims at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Middleton. But after three-plus years on the job, the 36-year-old Milwaukee native started to long for something more...

"New GI Bill Becomes Law," Inside Higher Ed, August 4.

A much-expanded Post-9/11 GI Bill is, as of Saturday, newly law in the land. President Obama marked the milestone in a celebratory ceremony at George Mason University Monday. “This is not simply a debt that we are repaying to the remarkable men and women who have served -- it is an investment in our own country," Obama said...
