"UW-Superior staff go kayaking for Furlough Friday," KUWS, July 31.

Some state employees might be a little down over furloughs mandated by Governor Doyle, but Brittany Berrens reports that a group of UW-Superior faculty members are making the best of it today. A group of 12 UW-Superior staff are going to enjoy their furlough day off to go kayaking in the Apostle Islands. The event is organized by the UWS Campus Recreation Department. Assistant Director Harry Anderson says this is an opportunity...

"UW honors genetics pioneer with symposium," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 31.     

Biochemist Har Gobind Khorana spent 10 years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, helping to crack the genetic code, pioneering the field of synthetic biology and earning a Nobel Prize. UW's annual Steenbock Symposium, which started Thursday and runs all weekend, honors Khorana's work with a four-day program on synthetic genes, synthetic life and biological systems...

"UW-Green Bay Extends Application Deadline for Some," WBAY, July 30.  

A bad economy prompts UW-Green Bay to extend its application deadline for students living in 11 Northeast Wisconsin counties. Dozens of students are taking advantage. With the start of classes at UWGB about a month away, for the first time, the university is still accepting applications, but only for people who live local. "There have been a couple of circumstances where students have stated very overtly in their applicant statement that finances have caused them to change their plans," says UWGB Admissions Director Pam Harvey-Jacobs. With the struggling economy, the university extended the deadlines, receiving 34 transfer applications since July first plus 44 freshman applications...

The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved its 2010 spending bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, with the panel's leaders hinting that they will find ways to increase funds for the National Institutes of Health and other programs important to colleges...

"Sallie Mae Has Spent Millions Fighting President's Student-Loan Plan," Chronicle of Higher Education, July 30.

Sallie Mae, the nation's largest student-loan company, spent $2-million on lobbying in the first half of this year in an effort to persuade lawmakers to consider alternatives to President Obama's plan to end bank-based lending to students and replace it with direct lending...
