"UWSP works to develop brand," Stevens Point Journal, June 23.

In these days of shrinking dollars and pools of students, the world of higher education is becoming increasingly competitive, and universities can become lost in the crowd. But the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is developing a plan to make sure it stands out. The university contacted more than 4,000 stakeholder groups -- prospective students, alumni, faculty, current students and community members -- to find out how they see the university and what is important about it to them. Traditionally, UWSP has promoted an image it selected from within. Using that information, the university is creating a UWSP brand, one that will emphasize those positive perceptions and help it communicate that message more effectively...

"Colleges must alter their business models, some presidents say," Chronicle of Higher Education, June 23.

College leaders today urged their colleagues to change how they do business in light of the recession, during a conference here called "Thinking Big in a Crisis," sponsored by the higher-education policy organizations Jobs for the Future, Education Sector, and the Lumina Foundation for Education. Panelists warned that unless colleges reformed their business models, higher education could face the same fate as the housing and banking industries. They offered examples of how their institutions have cut costs while opening doors to more students...

"From 2+2 to 3+1," Inside Higher Ed, June 23.

A proposal that would fundamentally change the relationship between Arizona's public universities and its community colleges is piquing the interest of many in the state, but is giving rise to more questions than answers. On Friday, Ernest Calderón, president-elect of the Arizona Board of Regents, surprised many community college leaders by encouraging the presidents of Arizona’s three four-year universities to allow students in select majors to complete three years' worth of coursework at a community college before completing a baccalaureate degree on a main university campus in their fourth year...

"Hazard or opportunity?," Inside Higher Ed, June 23.

The thesis behind a meeting of educators and policy makers here Monday was that higher education is facing a crisis and that if its leaders fail to respond adequately, the consequences will be significant for colleges and the country. That's a theme that many critics and an increasing number of supporters of higher education have hit in recent years, from the Spellings Commission to a collection of foundations and advocacy groups, including the sponsors of Monday's meeting: Jobs for the Future, the Lumina Foundation for Education, and Education Sector...
