"UW officials: Furloughs for all, even if you're paid with federal dollars," Blog, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 4.

All University of Wisconsin employees will have to take the unpaid furloughs mandated by Gov. Jim Doyle, even though salary cuts for workers paid with federal funds or other non-state money may not help the state's budget situation, officials said. At the UW System Board of Regents meeting Thursday in Madison, several Regents and chancellors questioned the logic of such an approach...

"UW regents to consider revised changes to student conduct code," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 3.

Students faced with suspension, expulsion or criminal charges for non-academic misconduct could have legal representation during hearings at University of Wisconsin System schools, but students would be expected to answer questions on their own, according to a revised policy the Board of Regents will consider this week...

Gov. Jim Doyle has tapped a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student to join the UW System Board of Regents. Doyle says Aaron Wingad will replace UW-Madison graduate student Colleene Thomas as the student representative on the 18-member board that sets policy for the UW System...

A UW-Eau Claire student has been picked by Governor Doyle to fill a big role in the UW System. Governor Jim Doyle today appointed Aaron Wingad to the University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents. Wingad will be replacing Colleene Thomas as the student representative. His appointment is effective immediately and will expire May 1, 2011...

Gov. Jim Doyle on Wednesday appointed UW-Eau Claire student Aaron Wingad to the University of Wisconsin System's Board of Regents..."Aaron has extensive experience working with both student government and faculty groups at UW-Eau Claire," Doyle said. "He has a strong understanding of the UW System and important issues that affect students at campuses around the state." Wingad is majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology with a minor in Spanish for the health sciences...

Highly regarded UW-Madison stem cell researcher Clive Svendsen is heading to Los Angeles to become director of the new Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute. Svendsen, who is co-director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center at UW-Madison, will start his new position on Dec. 1...

A top University of Wisconsin scientist is leaving Madison to work as the director of a new stem cell institute in California...

Clive N. Svendsen, a highly regarded stem cell researcher, has been named director of the new Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute, and will start his new position on Dec. 1, 2009...

"High-tech firm expands at NanoRite," Leader-Telegram, June 3.

A high-tech company is expanding its presence at the NanoRite Center for Innovation in Eau Claire. Resonant MicroSystems has formed a public-private nanotechnology partnership in the Chippewa Valley with UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout and Chippewa Valley Technical College...

"Resonant MicroSystems, Inc. to double workforce this year," WEAU-TV, June 3.

"Nanotechnology is looking at things that are really, really small," explains John Tritsch in the UW-Eau Claire Materials Science Lab...Local company Resonant MicroSystems partners with both UW Eau Claire and Stout, as well as the Chippewa Valley Technical College, to produce nanotechnology products...

"UW-P looks to go 'CSI:' The university seeks state funding to build a forensic research house on campus," Telegraph Herald, June 3.

Crime scene investigation training at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville would get a regionally unique facility if University of Wisconsin Regents this week approve construction of a $140,000 house for forensic research...

"Trash-hauling fee hike would help pay for alternative energy education," New Richmond News, June 3

If we end up paying more to dump our garbage, part of that money would train college students in the growing fields of alternative energy. The Wisconsin Institute of Sustainable Technology at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point would get $800,000 from an increase in the fee which trash-haulers pay to dump garbage at landfills...

"New partnership may bring renovation to UW-L Bookstore," WKBT, June 4.

Soon, the UW-L University Bookstore will get a much anticipated renovation. Right now the bookstore is operated by the university. But after looking into future plans for sustainability it was recommended UW-L partner with a private bookstore vendor...

"UW-L Campus Police revise security plans in case of emergencies," WKBT, June 3.

UW System campuses made progress on plans to prevent and respond to mass shootings. At UW La Crosse, the campus police chief says they've had an emergency response plan in place since the mid-90's. After the Virginia Tech massacre two years ago, UW-L, along with all other state colleges, revised their security plans to include how to react in catastrophes and when there's a shooter on campus. There's also a plan in case of a flu pandemic. UW-L's police chief says this plan is in place so people have the answers they need when an emergency happens...

"UW-L nearly doubles fee to use stadium; Aquinas, Central exploring options," La Crosse Tribune, June 4.

Central and Aquinas high schools will pay about $800 more a game this season to play football at the new University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The schools had paid $965 a game for at least 12 years, said Joe Beran, Central's activities director. That fee almost doubles this year to $1,800. "We are a little surprised it has taken as big of a jump as it has, but at the same time it is a fantastic facility," said Ted Knutson, principal and athletic director at Aquinas...

"Addiction expert set for UW-Stout talk," Leader-Telegram, June 3.

A drug and addiction expert says the country is experiencing a growing problem with older adults addicted to pain killers...Older adults who become addicted to pain killers don't fit the stereotype of an addict, William Moyers said. They are employed, have families and abide by the law because their drugs usually are legal prescriptions...

"Class rank system could be on way out in several Dane County school districts," Wisconsin State Journal, June 4.

The fight to be head of the class could be replaced with a less competitive, but some say more fair, system as the Waunakee School District -- like others in Dane County -- considers doing away with class rank. Of the 19 Dane County high schools that responded to a State Journal survey, five are considering or have plans to do away with class rank in coming years...

"Recession causes Wisconsin to lose 140,000 jobs," WISN, June 3.

According to a University of Wisconsin-Madison think tank that studies the state's employment picture, Wisconsin has lost nearly 140,000 jobs since the beginning of the recession.The Center on Wisconsin Strategy reported that 137,500 jobs disappeared from the state between December 2007 and April 2009...
