The University of Wisconsin System is facing a total state cut of some $211 million in the next biennial budget compared to what it had requested, according to a fact sheet from UW officials...

"Madison to host Midwest venture capitalists," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 19.

Madison will host more than 200 private equity investors at the Midwest's annual gathering of venture capitalists, Gov. Jim Doyle said Tuesday from the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta.The MidAmerica Healthcare Venture Forum will give emerging companies the opportunity to get in front of venture capitalists they might not otherwise have a chance to meet. It will begin Nov. 10...The University of Wisconsin-Madison is one of the world's biggest research universities, and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation one of its biggest technology transfer organizations, Doyle said. The $150 million public/private Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, along with the expanded tax credits, should help the state grow even more young, high-tech companies, Doyle said...

"UW-Superior honors faculty and staff for service, academic achievement," Superior Telegram, May 19.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior honored faculty and staff members earlier this month for teaching ability, scholarly achievements and service to the campus and the community...

"Report: UW-Parkside teaching program poorly run," Associated Press, May 20.

The Department of Public Instruction says the University of Wisconsin-Parkside has not been properly educating students to become licensed teachers. A report released Wednesday says the school's teacher preparation program has "serious deficiencies" and does not meet many state standards...

"On Campus: University of Wisconsin-Madison gets $2.5 million grant," Wisconsin State Journal, May 20.

A $2.5 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will allow UW-Madison to hire 12 faculty members, with a focus on connections between the West and Asia. With the first $400,000 of the grant in hand, officials in the College of Letters and Science will begin searching for the first four professors this fall, said Dean Gary Sandefur. The rest of the money will come in over the next three years...

"Report: More biofuels needed for UW power plant," Associated Press, May 19.

Uncertainty about the availability and cost of biomass fuels makes Gov. Jim Doyle's $251 million plan to overhaul a University of Wisconsin-Madison power plant somewhat risky, according to a report released Tuesday. Doyle has proposed converting the coal-fired Charter Street plant, long a major polluter in the area, to run on cleaner-burning biomass fuels such as wood chips and paper pellets. His administration says it would be one of the nation's largest biomass projects and the plan has delighted environmentalists...

"Charter Street plant would switch to natural gas and biomass," Wisconsin State Journal, May 20.

By December 2013, the UW-Madison’s Charter Street heating plant will be off its diet of coal and may start digesting wood chips, if state lawmakers approve a $251 million project...

"UW selects finalists for provost position," Badger Herald, May 20.

The University of Wisconsin announced the finalists for the position of provost this afternoon. Included are three internal candidates: Paul DeLuca, vice dean and associate dean for research and graduate studies at the School of Medicine and Public Health; Irwin Goldman, vice dean and associate dean for research at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; and Richard Moss, chair of the department of physiology at the School of Medicine and Public Health...

A 30-point boost in math and critical-reading scores on the SAT reasoning test is statistically meaningless yet could make or break a student's chances of admission at "a substantial minority" of colleges, a research paper says...

...At a time when the financial sector is in disrepair and when many seasoned bankers can't find work, there remains a handful of new graduates who will start careers on Wall Street this summer. Stories of investment-banking careers blossoming amid such economic uncertainty are not the norm, but some of those who have succeeded in getting Wall Street job offers voice almost unflappable optimism in the face of the bleak economic picture...
