Wisconsin-reared Carol Bartz, who grew up on a farm near Alma, took over Tuesday as CEO of one of the country's most famous tech companies, Yahoo Inc. A 1971 computer science graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Bartz brings to the struggling Internet search giant a track record of accomplishment and toughness...

"State colleges tighten belts in response to endowment losses," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 13.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior will award about $100,000 less in endowed scholarships this fall. Dozens of employees at Marian University in Fond du Lac have agreed to go to reduced workweeks to save the school money...Colleges and universities in Wisconsin, like their counterparts nationwide, are dealing with the effects of the economic downturn. All have had precipitous drops in their endowments since last summer, ranging from 18% at places such as Viterbo University to 35% at Beloit College. Meanwhile, some have seen enrollments or annual fund raising decline. Others are bracing for potentially huge state budget cuts...

"The I.R.S. considers pressing schools to further reveal their business activities," New York Times, Jan. 13.

The Internal Revenue Service is considering expanding its scrutiny of colleges and universities to focus on billions of dollars associated with academic research, federal financing and intellectual property, a senior agency official said on Tuesday.The expansion of an investigation would put pressure on the schools to further disclose their inner financial workings as the I.R.S. undertakes a major effort to learn more about whether academic institutions are improperly using their nonprofit status to avoid paying certain taxes...

"College abruptly moves up deadline for applications," New York Times, Jan. 13.

College-bound procrastinators, beware: When state budgets get tight, application deadlines can tighten up, too. At Fresno State, part of the California State University system, the original deadline for freshman applications was Feb. 1. But last Friday, the university stopped taking freshman applications, three weeks early...

"Athletes and colleges feel a recruiting pinch," New York Times, Jan. 13.

...The economy has affected college sports programs across the nation, and recruiting is another area that is starting to be touched by tightening budgets of universities and the prospects they are seeking...

"Hearing offers insight into education secretary nominee's priorities for higher education," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 14.

Arne Duncan, Barack Obama's nominee to be secretary of education, pledged to work toward the president-elect’s goals of increasing the maximum Pell Grant and simplifying the process of applying for student aid during his confirmation hearing in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday... Many colleges are experimenting with e-textbooks these days. But at Northwest Missouri State University, President Dean L. Hubbard hopes they’ll be an e-book only campus (or close to it) soon — as soon as the market will allow it...
