"University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Martin warns of tough choices," Wisconsin State Journal, Dec. 16.

In the face of a budget crisis, University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin said the state's flagship university will likely have to make choices that "won't feel good to do but will make the university stronger." Martin made the statement at the first of three forums for University of Wisconsin-Madison students, faculty and staff to discuss the university's future in a slumping economy...

"Wisconsin Vet School adds director of clinical scientist training," Veterinary Practice News, Dec. 15.

In a move to recruit veterinary clinical scientists, the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has appointed Lauren Trepanier, DVM, Ph.D., to the new role of director of clinician scientist training...

"Verona church hosts Study Day for University of Wisconsin-Madison students," Wisconsin State Journal, Dec. 16.

University of Wisconsin-Madison students celebrated Study Day Monday at Blackhawk Evangelical Free Church in Verona, where the congregation opened its doors and hearts to 1,000-plus students in the midst of final exams. They arrived with books, laptops and appetites for free meals, quiet or group study, tutoring, recreational breaks of ping-pong and basketball, Christmas-themed movies and an optional worship service...

"Holy Grail of stem cell research within reach," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dec. 16.

The stories describing how scientists learned to reprogram cells and the Web page detailing the scope of stem cell research are based on interviews with 90 scientists, doctors and bioethicists, as well as supporters and opponents of research involving embryonic stem cells. The Journal Sentinel interviewed 15 of the scientists involved in the race to reprogram human cells...

"Recession could help city tackle 'brain drain' problem," Business Journal of Milwaukee, Dec. 12.

...The Milwaukee “brain drain” has been an issue in the business community for years. Larger companies have tried to get, and keep, talented young people working in the region by setting up management trainee programs and college internships. Anecdotally, some businesses are actually benefiting from the economic downturn by using this time to go after the best and brightest people who are available after mass layoffs across the country...

"A piece of the stimulus pie," Inside Higher Ed, Dec. 16.

...Monday, a broad coalition of college associations jointly released a letter urging Congress to “make higher education a critical part of the economic stimulus package,” through a combination of increased need-based aid for students, additional relief for student loan borrowers, and grants to states to help colleges pay for the sort of “ready-to-go” facilities that would create jobs and stimulate economic activity...(Note: UW System President Kevin P. Reilly and UW System Board of Regents President Mark Bradley were among those signing the letter)...
