"UW Regents to meet at UW-L," La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 2.

Amid budgets and building plans, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents will learn a lot about the people at UW-La Crosse when its members visit here later this week. For the first time in eight years, the Regents will meet in La Crosse Thursday and Friday...“So many campuses focus on the data and the stats that they lose the story,” said Jim Jorstad, director of Education Technologies at UW-L. “We thought it would be good if we concentrate on the stories behind the numbers”...

"UW-System plans to cut pay raises in half," Superior Telegram, Dec. 1.

With Wisconsin facing what state officials called the worst budget disaster ever, the University of Wisconsin-System Board of Regents will take up a proposal to scale back pay raises for faculty and academic staff. The plan was announced on Friday by Kevin P. Reilly, UW System president..

In an effort to help address the state's financial crisis, University of Wisconsin schools will be tightening their belts. This week, the UW System Board of Regents will hold their meeting in La Crosse to discuss ways they can decrease spending...

"University of Wisconsin chancellor wants fresh solutions to funding cuts," Capital Times, Dec. 1.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin said she has asked deans to start considering contingency plans for how best to absorb potential cuts in funding due to the state's financial crisis. Martin, speaking at Bascom Hall Monday evening during this month's UW Faculty Senate meeting, asked those in attendance to come up with "innovative ideas" that might help the university operate more efficiently and implored faculty and staff to "think outside the box" in an effort to find solutions to possible budget cuts...

University of Wisconsin Chancellor Biddy Martin wants to bring the campus community together to discuss the current state budget crisis and possible solutions for the university. Martin said at a Faculty Senate meeting Monday she will hold three forums regarding the crisis to discuss how things could be done differently at UW...

"UW-Whitewater ranks No. 1 in supplying state teachers," Janesville Gazette, Dec. 2.

...[Bill Frain] is one of hundreds of teachers who graduate annually from UW-Whitewater, which turns out the most teachers in the UW System, according to a recent Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction report...

"UW fundraisers feel pinch," Wisconsin Public Radio, Dec. 1.

With the bleak economy hitting people in the pocketbooks, many are scaling back on contributions and gifts to organizations, including the UW System. The outlook is mixed for two of the system's larger campuses...

"UW reps present plan for new south campus union to city commission," Daily Cardinal, Dec. 2.

Plans to create a pedestrian mall as a part of the design for the new south campus union made their way to Madison’s Plan Commission at a public hearing Monday night. Representatives from UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Union Initiative and architects unveiled their design plans to the commission in an effort to gain approval for demolition of Union South, which occupies the location for the project...

"UW-L loses sex discrimination lawsuit," La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 2.

Administrative Law Judge John Brown found the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse discriminated on the basis of sex in its failure to appoint Martin Venneman as the dean of the college of Science and Health in May 2006. The judge’s decision means Venneman can have the dean job if he still wants it, as well as back pay, attorney costs and other benefits. Venneman’s attorney, James Birnbaum, did not know whether Venneman would accept the job. Venneman claimed former UW-L Provost Elizabeth Hitch chose Karen Palmer McLean over him as interim dean because she was younger and female...

"UW-River Falls announces plans to cut costs," River Falls Journal, Dec. 2.

Officials from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls announced Monday several steps that will be taken to reduce costs at the university...

"Violence in India concerns professors," Leader-Telegram, Nov. 28.

Two area educators from India said Friday that terrorism has occurred for years in India, but not to the extent of the 10 sites attacked Wednesday and Thursday in Mumbai by gunmen who killed about 150 people, including at least five Americans...

National

"The mental health of students and non-students," Inside Higher Ed, Dec. 2.

Ever since the killings at Virginia Tech last year, there has been widespread speculation about the relative incidence of mental health disorders among college students. A new study in The Archives of General Psychiatry finds that such disorders are common, and that far fewer students receive treatment than one might like. But the study — believed to be the largest national comparison of the mental health of college students and comparably aged non-students — finds that non-students are as likely to have mental health disorders and as unlikely to seek treatment as their peers in college...

"A chancellor's response to tuition report," Inside Higher Ed, Dec. 2.

A report issued Monday, "University tuition, consumer choice and college affordability," called for a change in the public discussion about college costs — both what it costs to run public universities and for students and their families to attend them. The report was released by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and focuses on public research universities. How does the situation look elsewhere in public higher education? James H. McCormick, chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, agreed to respond to questions from his perspective in a system of regional state universities and community colleges...
