"UW System puts restrictions on hiring," Wisconsin Radio Network, Nov. 14.

New controls are being placed on hiring at University of Wisconsin System campuses. A directive from System President Kevin Reilly calls for all hiring decisions on UW campuses to be made directly by chancellors. System spokesman David Giroux says it's a significantly higher level of control. Those decisions are typically made by department heads...

"UW to tighten belt on hiring," Badger Herald, Nov. 14.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents President Kevin Reilly recently announced the UW System must “tighten” its hiring policies in response to current economic instability. In a memo released Oct. 28, Reilly said chancellors throughout the system must approve all new hires and deemed them essential to “the university’s mission at this time”...

"Budget cuts force UW System to reduce hiring," Daily Cardinal, Nov. 14.

The current fiscal crisis has the UW System facing many potential spending cuts, including decreasing the amount of faculty it hires. UW System President Kevin Reilly sent a memo to all UW chancellors Oct. 28 stating that beginning Nov. 1, new hires must be approved by the chancellor or a designee and hires “must be deemed those most essential to the university’s mission at this time”...

"Regents bestow highest teaching award upon UW-Stout department," Dunn County News, Nov. 12.

The University of Wisconsin-Stout department of mathematics, statistics and computer science was given the highest teaching honor conferred by the UW System Board of Regents on Nov. 6. Department chair Chris Bendel and three other members of the department — Diane Christie, Laura Schmidt and Eileen Zito — along with Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen and Provost Julie Furst-Bowe, attended the board meeting on the UW-Madison campus to receive the Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs...

"UW students concerned about norovirus spread," WKOW-TV, Nov. 13.

University Health officials confirm three new cases of norovirus on campus. That brings the total number of students infected so far to 48...

"Mascot watch," Chronicle of Higher Education, Nov. 14.

...(UWSP) university's chancellor, Linda Bunnell, had always longed for a live mascot, but who would care for it? Luckily her executive assistant, Rob Manzke, was looking for a family dog to appease his two young sons. The family rescued the mascot-to-be, named McKenzie, from a pound in Kentucky, and a star was born... (paid subscription required)

"Communicative disorders," Editorial, Badger Herald, Nov. 14.

...(Biddy Martin) is the first University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor in nearly 20 years who has not come from former Chancellor Donna Shalala’s family of university administration, and everyone is curious as to how she operates...On Tuesday, UW announced the creation of a vice chancellor of university relations, which will communicate with, well, anyone with some relation to the university...While we appreciate Martin’s attempt to open the lines of communication, this is not the way to do it...

"Grads to see opportunity in long term," Badger Herald, Nov. 14.

The former president of Monster.com’s North American division told a University of Wisconsin student crowd Thursday night their generation will have “more opportunities than any generation preceding it” despite the current financial crisis. Steve Pogorzelski, a UW alumnus and former leader of the popular career website, did say the economic crisis would make finding a career difficult for students just graduating college...

"Eau Claire couple being honored for philanthropy," The Leader-Telegram, Nov. 14.

Dick and Marcia Larson sometimes receive the greatest gratification for their donations in the smallest forms, such as a letter from a UW-Eau Claire student thanking them for contributing to a scholarship fund...They were the first to make a $1 million gift to the Eau Claire Area Community Foundation, and they've been involved with Luther Hospital, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, the Children's Museum of Eau Claire, Boy Scouts of America, Literacy Volunteers and United Way...

"3 Kenoshans among 22 principals earning Wisconsin Master Educator licenses," The Daily Kenoshan, Nov. 13.

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster commended 22 principals who earned a 10-year Wisconsin Master Educator License in 2008 for an accomplishment that shows true devotion to education...The mid-career principals worked with the Department of Public Instruction, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, as well as with national consultants...

"Colleges may yet feel bite from recession, Moody's analysts warn," Chronicle of Higher Education, Nov. 14.

American colleges have so far avoided some of the worst effects of the nation’s economic downturn. That could change quickly, financial experts told a conference that was held here on Thursday by Moody's Investors Service and The Chronicle...“Higher education, compared with many other sectors of the municipal market, is normally more insulated from near-term budget shortfalls caused by recessions,” Moody’s reported last month. “However, the potential impacts of the combined credit freeze and recession on some colleges and universities will be significant if current trends persist.” Those effects could include less availability of private student loans, a shrinking pool of people who can afford to go to college, and more difficulty in borrowing funds for the colleges' operations and growth...
