University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly appointed a committee Tuesday to conduct a national search for a chancellor for UW-Parkside...The committee will incorporate changes designed to improve the vetting process that the System implemented after the failed search at UW-Parkside...

Chancellor Richard Telfer will be inaugurated as UW-Whitewater's 15th chancellor at 1 p.m. Friday in Irving Young Auditorium. Telfer has served as interim chancellor since 2007, when he was appointed to replace Martha Saunders, who took a job at Southern Mississippi. He's been at the university since 1985...

A University of Wisconsin-Madison student killed by a drunken driver in Hong Kong was remembered Monday as an adventurous guy who worked as a volunteer at a Milwaukee soup kitchen. Kurt Leswing, 21, of Milwaukee was traveling in the Semester at Sea program, which sends students on a 15-week voyage around the world. The senior business major was killed Friday. The driver was arrested...

"Norovirus outbreak at UW biggest in 10 years," Capital Times, Nov. 12.

University of Wisconsin health officials are cautioning students in dorms to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before preparing food after what's being called the biggest outbreak of the norovirus on campus in the last 10 years...

When it comes to incidences related to safety on campus, up to 90 to 95 percent of them are due to excessive alcohol consumption. That's what UW-Madison Police Lt. Eric Holen told students and others at a safety forum Tuesday night...

For the past several years, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents has demanded domestic partner benefits for its employees in its proposed budget. Sadly, the state Legislature has repeatedly blocked this request. But with Democrats winning control of both the state Senate and Assembly on Nov. 4, bringing domestic partner benefits to the university system must be a high priority for state lawmakers when the Legislature reconvenes in January...

An unlikely class is helping to solve an erosion problem in the Republic of the Gambia in West Africa. Students in a remedial math class at the University of Wisconsin-Superior are using geometry to predict where erosion will occur in an area that's losing land to heavy rainfall and the Gambia River...

"$5 billion budget deficit to bring job cuts, spending cuts, maybe tax hikes, Doyle says," Wisconsin State Journal, Nov. 12.

The harsh economy will drive Wisconsin's budget shortfall to more than $5 billion over the next 2½ years — the worst fiscal crisis in more than two decades and a harbinger of deep spending cuts, state job reductions and at least some targeted tax increases, Gov. Jim Doyle said Tuesday...

"State deficit will exceed $5 billion, Doyle says," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 12.

Gov. Jim Doyle said Tuesday that the state budget deficit would top $5billion through mid-2011, making it by far the biggest funding gap in state history. In a meeting with Capitol reporters, the Democratic governor said that he would push new taxes on hospitals and oil companies but that he hoped to avoid other tax increases. He did not rule out increases in the income tax or sales tax, however...

"Gov. Jim Doyle projects Wisconsin state budget deficit will hit $5 billion," Associated Press, Nov. 12.

Gov. Jim Doyle said Tuesday he would do "everything humanly possible" to avoid general sales or income tax increases to deal with a budget shortfall that could pass $5 billion. The "serious and extraordinary" problem, caused by a drop in tax collections and a national recession, will lead to state job and other cuts, Doyle said. He did not specify what the cuts would be, but said savings would have to be found at University of Wisconsin and in public school aid. Doyle said he hoped there wouldn’t have to be large tuition increases at the university...

The Senate Majority Leader says the budget will be among the top priorities of Democrats in the upcoming session. State Senator Russ Decker (D-Weston) says he's already talking to the Governor about what needs to be done to help fight a growing budget deficit. The Governor now says the state could face a $5 billion shortfall. Decker says many options are already being looked at. Decker says another budget repair bill may even be necessary, before lawmakers work on the next state budget...

The Wisconsin biennial budget deficit is expected to drop further into the red than first expected, Gov. Jim Doyle announced Tuesday. Now expecting a $5 billion shortfall over the next two and a half years — up from the $3 billion estimation made Oct. 15 — Doyle said the national economical recession and a decline in state tax revenues are to blame...
