"UW Regents weigh pay increases against maintaining costs," Capital Times, Nov. 6.

...On the one hand, system leaders agree it's time to seriously address the issue of low pay -- at least when compared to peer institutions -- for faculty and staff...Yet as determined as people seem to be to tackle this pressing issue, no one knows where the money is going to come from to solve the problem...

"Higher faculty pay an uphill battle, regent says," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 6.

The University of Wisconsin System needs to come up with new ways to make the case for higher faculty pay in light of the economic crisis, Regent David Walsh said today. UW System faculty are paid 10% less than peers at comparable universities, Walsh said, but legislators have not responded to close the gap and they won't start now. "Our faculty and staff are not at the level they should be. Nobody disputes that," Walsh said. "But this is a terrible time…We can't keep going to the well with the same statistics. We need to reframe the message"...

"Regents consider spreading out doctoral degree options," Badger Herald, Nov. 7.

At its meeting Thursday, the Board of Regents debated allowing other University of Wisconsin System schools to offer doctoral degrees as well as educational doctoral degree programs...

The UW System Board of Regents held a meeting Thursday to discuss the recruitment and retention challenges of the academic workforce. According to UW System Board of Regents president Mark Bradley, the current economic crisis plaguing the nation is hitting home at all UW System schools, which are trying to attract and retain faculty of the highest caliber...

Class rank still matters when it comes to being accepted at destination universities, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but most admissions officers take a holistic approach to determine which students have the most potential, educators say...

"UW System endowment down 19% this year," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 6.

The University of Wisconsin System Trust Funds endowment is down about 19% since the beginning of the year because of the downturn in the economy, but officials expect they will still be able to meet funding commitments for the year...

"Admissions office finds new freshman class stats," Daily Cardinal, Nov. 7.

According to university officials, over the last three years the UW-Madison Office of Admissions has accepted many freshman students with first-generation status or whose parents did not earn a college degree...Rob Seltzer, director of admissions, said the office has an interest in the success of first-generation students because it affects the stability and strength of the freshman class as a whole...

New statistics report first-generation students, students whose parents did not earn a college degree, comprise roughly 20 percent of the University of Wisconsin’s freshman class...

"Committee approves new synagogue at University of Wisconsin," Chabad News, Nov. 6.

From the start, Chabad-Lubavitch activities in Madison, Wisc., have been centered on the 40,000-strong University of Wisconsin. But in the 28 years since Rabbi Yona and Faygie Matusof arrived in the state capital along the shore of Lake Mendota, a campus-based Chabad synagogue has been out of reach. Until now. Following the granting of a conditional-use permit for the building ... Jewish students will finally have a Chabad synagogue to call their own...

Segregated fees for University of Wisconsin students currently stand at a bloated $445 per semester. Starting next fall, they’ll go up another $48, thanks to the Wisconsin Union Initiative. And if the UW Recreational Sports Board has its way, you could soon add another $60 on top of that...

"University joins 'green' group," The Spectator, Nov. 6.

Recently, all students on the UW-Eau Claire campus were sent an e-mail explaining that the university had just become a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. According to its Web site, AASHE is an association of colleges around the United States and Canada that work together to create a sustainable future...

"TV needs a female engineer," Column, Discovery Channel, Nov. 7.

We do not have enough women engineers in the United States. When I look around the undergraduate classes that I teach I don't see very many female faces...No wonder women have made up only about 20 percent of the undergraduate engineering population in colleges for the last ten years...What we really need is a good, prime-time TV show about engineering that tops the charts in the Nielson ratings...(Author is Wendy Crone, professor at UW-Madison)...
