"UW System observes Higher Education Day," The Journal Times, Oct. 6.

Oct. 6 has been designated as Higher Education Day in Wisconsin. Described as a "single day dedicated to thousands of futures," University of Wisconsin System president Kevin Reilly said this is an opportunity for all educational institutions to assist Wisconsin students in focusing on life goals and the role education can play in reaching them...

"Burmaster won't seek third term," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 7.

Elizabeth Burmaster, state superintendent of public instruction since 2001, said Monday that she will not seek a third term as the state's highest ranking kindergarten-through-12th grade education official...

"Regents' policy a terrible move," Column, Badger Herald, Oct. 7.

The revision of University of Wisconsin System Administrative Code Chapter 17 went virtually unnoticed on the campus. Perhaps students were too busy preparing their pre-game parties for the big Ohio State game, or maybe we were just too wrapped up in the presidential elections. Whatever the excuse, we stood by as the UW System Board of Regents granted an even greater arsenal of disciplinary actions for non-academic student misconduct. Through vague language and limitless jurisdiction, UW has just claimed the authority to punish you for a vast assortment of non-academic infringements...

On Campus

"OSA petition to advance discussion of higher ed," UW-Oshkosh Today, Oct. 6.

Members of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Student Association are calling on their fellow students to sign a petition urging policy makers, administrators and faculty to work together to make higher education more affordable, accessible, accountable and competitive as part of the state's Higher Education Day Oct. 7. The petition, which can be found at http://studentvoice.petitionhost.com, can be signed until Nov. 4, at which time it will be forwarded to all stakeholders, including state and national politicians. Preliminary results will be shared with state and federal candidates on Oct. 28, one week before the general election...

"Importance of youth vote comes into focus," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 5.

...She's part of a statewide, nonpartisan student coalition, Wisconsin Student Public Interest Research Group and the Student Vote Coalition of UW-Milwaukee. trying to register 10,000 new voters from UWM by the state's Oct. 15 deadline...

"Regents must get serious about picking chancellors," Editorial, Capital Times, Oct. 7.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents did a fine job of hiring a new chancellor for the system's flagship campus at Madison -- respected scholar and administrator Biddy Martin -- but the board's chancellor searches do not always turn out well...Now, as the board prepares to begin a new search for a UW-Parkside chancellor -- and carries forward searches for new chancellors at UW-Green Bay and UW-River Falls -- it is clear that the 18 regents need to make sure that they have enough information to make sound hiring decisions...

"Chancellor backs up decision to suspend UW band," Capital Times, Oct. 7.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin said Monday that she agrees with Mike Leckrone's decision to suspend the UW Marching Band indefinitely after hazing allegations were leveled against some of its members late last week...

"UW chancellor says she won't meddle in Athletic Board despite allegations," Capital Times, Oct. 7.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin said she has no immediate plans to address allegations by Jeremi Suri that the UW Athletic Board has become nothing more than a rubber stamp of sorts for the desires of the athletic department...

"WMC to consider toning down its political ads," Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 5.

Stung by criticism over its political activities, the state's largest business lobby is rethinking the tenor of its election-season advertising and how it sells itself to the public. The move by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce comes in the wake of recent criticism from former UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, major Dane County employer Epic Systems and liberal groups over its campaign ads and political activities...

"Students right to scrutinize fees," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 7.

UW-Madison students are smart to step up scrutiny of the excessive fees they pay on top of tuition. Student fees at UW-Madison have more than doubled over the last decade, from $404 to $890. That's a much faster rate of growth than inflation or personal income in Wisconsin. And it makes affording college that much harder for ordinary students...

"UW-W office might bolster local business," Janesville Gazette, Oct. 7.

With an eye on helping displaced General Motors' workers and other struggling businesses, UW-Whitewater is extending its reach directly to the Janesville area. In a partnership with Forward Janesville, UW-Whitewater said Monday it will open a satellite office of its Small Business Development Center in Janesville...

"Bands gone wild," Inside Higher Ed, Oct. 7.

...The allegations in California are the latest in a string of incidents that have raised questions about the behavior of athletic marching bands. The University of Wisconsin at Madison suspended its band Friday as a result of "serious hazing allegations," "alcohol use" and "sexualized behavior." Last month, the marching band at Prairie View A&M University was suspended after an anonymous person claimed band members had been hit and had their heads shaven during hazing rituals. "It is a part of the culture [of marching bands], and it' got to stop," said George Edwards, head marching band director at Prairie View...

"$35-million helps Cornell U. recruit faculty and ward off poachers," Chronicle of Higher Education, Oct. 10.

When it comes to building a top-notch faculty, racing to land prominent scholars is only half the battle for colleges. The other half: Fighting off poachers intent on swiping the college's existing talented midcareer professors... (paid subscription required)
