In fact, our public school systems in Wisconsin are one of the areas people point to when they consider moving to the state or when businesses and industries consider locating here. University of Wisconsin System leaders say they've expanded a program that allows students to earn UW-Madison degrees after spending their first two years at other campuses...

"Student conduct code revisions move to next round of review," Daily Cardinal, Oct. 6.

The UW System Board of Regents approved a new draft of rule revisions to Chapters 17 and 18 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code at a meeting Friday, which moves the changes to the next stage in the process...

On Campus

"UW suspends band over hazing charge," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 4.

The entire University of Wisconsin Marching Band has been suspended from performing because of "serious hazing allegations," school officials announced Friday...

University of Wisconsin officials interviewed members of the university Marching Band one at a time Saturday as part of their investigation into “serious hazing allegations,” officials said.

Proposed changes to the University of Wisconsin System student conduct code that would expand administrators’ ability to punish students for off-campus misconduct advanced to the next stage Friday...

"Water hub taps into future," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 4.

The Milwaukee region should create an agency to coax growth out of its patchwork water-technology sector and devote a research park to water industries, according to civic and business leaders who want the area to become the “Silicon Valley of water technologies.”...Those efforts complement the creation of a graduate-level School of Freshwater Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which had nine delegates at the meeting, including its chancellor, Carlos Santiago. The university hopes to launch the school by fall of 2009, and the school could host the proposed regional water agency...

"Missing UW-Milwaukee student may have been killed," Associated Press, Oct. 5.

A missing University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student may have been the victim of foul play, the Dodge County Sheriff's Department said Saturday...

"Police question efficiency of crime tracking website," Wisconsin Public Radio, Oct. 3.

A new website directed at universities lets users view detailed maps of crimes on or around their campus. But some security officials question just how well they work. UCrime.com launched in August, and features about 200 colleges and universities in North America and England so far. The UW-Madison is the only Wisconsin school currently on the site...

"UW students create new magazine for Madison campus," Associated Press, Oct. 5.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison junior has started a new magazine that's now available throughout the city. "Red" is the brainchild of editor-in-chief Sydney Burdick and geared toward University of Wisconsin-Madison students...

"UW-Stout proposes upgrade and renovation of residence halls," Dunn County News, Oct. 4.

A plan to spend $12.4 million to renovate a residence hall on the University of Wisconsin-Stout campus and construct a new food service facility was unanimously approved by the UW System Board of Regents Friday...

"More groups being cut off from UW student fees ," Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 5.

A student-run UW-Madison committee has decided that the 37-year old student organization Vets for Vets won't get funding through student fees...Vets for Vets is one of several groups that have fallen victim to an effort by student leaders to tighten the eligibility criteria for funding through student fees, also known as segregated fees...

"Go around the world five hours a month," River Falls Journal, Oct. 2.

UW-River Falls is currently the educational institution of choice of about 80 students who come from countries as far away as Japan, Kenya, Germany, Taiwan, India and several other nations...Students like Katsuyama and those host families are part of the university’s Global Connections, run by Brent Greene, director of international education programs...

"Homework center allows UWSP psych students real-life application," Stevens Point Journal, Oct. 6.

Students and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are benefiting from the Ben Franklin Junior High School Homework Center. University psychology students in assistant professor Debbie Palmer's Psychology of Adolescents and Developmental Psychology classes have the opportunity to do service learning in the center by assisting with homework and applying their textbooks to real-life situations...

State

"Higher Education Day set for Tuesday," Capital Times, Oct. 6.

...Higher Education Day in Wisconsin is slated for Tuesday, with more than 20 events planned statewide to make the public aware of the learning opportunities in the Badger State..."Due to our terrific partnerships with the UW System, the private colleges, the technical colleges and private industry, we will be reaching students of all ages throughout the state," said state Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass...

National

"Universities in Colo., Neb. could see less diversity," USA Today, Oct. 5.

...Salehy, of Iranian descent, fears that the state's flagship university, currently about 9% non-white, might become less diverse if Colorado passes a ballot measure banning government consideration of race or gender in university admissions, contracts and state spending. The measure is similar to ones approved by voters in California, Michigan and Washington state, as well as one on the Nebraska ballot this year. It's part of a state-by-state push by former California regent Ward Connerly, who tried but failed to get the question on ballots in Arizona and Oklahoma this year...

"FSU's provost search goes public," Fayetteville Observer, Oct. 5.

In 2004, Carol Blackshire-Belay resigned as dean of liberal arts and sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, weeks after an internal investigation found no evidence to support her charges of racism and sexism in the Humanistic Studies Department. The episode could have provided key clues for Fayetteville State University before hiring Blackshire-Belay in July as provost. But FSU officials never knew of her troubles because the search committee responsible for her selection never called Wisconsin-Green Bay to double-check the facts on her resume. And Blackshire-Belay never told FSU she resigned her Wisconsin-Green Bay position...
