Four University of Wisconsin chancellors will have to wait for raises that had been expected to be approved this week...

The nation’s current economic crisis has caused the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents to postpone a proposal that could have increased the salaries of four chancellors...The Board of Regents will be holding their monthly meeting today and Friday at UW-Stevens Point...

"UW chancellors' pay raises postponed amid shaky economy," Daily Cardinal, Oct. 2.

The UW System Board of Regents, which was set to consider raising the salaries of four UW chancellors, removed the item Wednesday from the agenda of this week’s Regents meeting...

"Proposed rules cover off-campus student conduct," Advance-Titan, Oct. 2.

This week the University of Wisconsin System will discuss revisions to Chapter 17 and 18 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, which includes proposed guidelines for the punishment of students for their off-campus nonacademic behavior. In March the Oshkosh Student Association sent a five-page letter to UW System President Kevin P. Reilly and the chair of the Review Committee with suggested revisions for Chapter 17...

"UW fear-mongers to justify new misconduct policy," Column, Badger Herald, Oct. 2.

...When they pass a series of updates to the UW System’s student misconduct policy, the regents will give administrators an expanded power to discipline students for crimes off campus. Additionally, students will not be entitled to legal representation during their hearing...

"Regents' agenda includes UW-Stout building improvements," Leader-Telegram, Sept. 30.

A plan to spend $12.4 million to renovate a residence hall at UW-Stout and construct a new food service facility will be presented at a two-day UW System Board of Regents committee that starts Thursday...

"STEPS program fosters manufacturing, engineering aspirations in female students," Design News, Sept. 5.

A critical component of educating girls is building their self confidence...The inspiring STEPS program founded at the University of Wisconsin at Stout answered that call a dozen years ago and is still going strong. STEPS stands for Science, Technology, and Engineering Preview summer camp. For four weeks each summer, 160 12-year-old girls spend five days in groups of 40 learning about electronics, physics, motors, metal casting and bending, plastics thermo-forming and how computers work...

"Senate endorses changes to Chapter 18," Exponent, Oct. 1.

With a 12-0-1 vote, (UW-Plattevile's) Student Senate passed a resolution endorsing changes to Chapter 18 of the UW System administrative code that would allow UW System campuses to declare themselves smoke-free. Kevin Opgenorth, student senator at UW-Platteville and non-traditional student regent for the UW-System, will now take the resolution to the UW System Board of Regents for review...

"UWM chooses Mandel Group to build dorm along Milwaukee River," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 2.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Real Estate Foundation has selected Mandel Group, Inc., to build a 700-student dorm at the old Hometown gas station site on the Milwaukee River corridor off North Ave....UWM says the new residence will help fill unmet student housing demand. About 90% of freshmen want housing, but UWM has beds for fewer than 60%...

"UW-Madison tests emergency text-messaging service," WKOW 27, Oct. 1.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison conducted the first full-scale test of WiscAlerts-Text, its emergency text-messaging service, at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday. A test message was sent to all 13,500 users in an effort to improve performance, test the speed of the system and discover any glitches in message delivery in advance of a future emergency situation...

"Text alert test delivers 70-75 percent success," Daily Cardinal, Oct. 2.

UW-Madison’s newest emergency communication method, WiscAlerts-Text, underwent its first test-run Wednesday afternoon...University of Wisconsin Police Lt. Michael Newton, who manages the text-message system, said Wednesday’s test had a preliminary delivery success between 70 and 75 percent...

"UW Credit Union gives $215,000 for scholarships," Capital Times, Oct. 1.

The University of Wisconsin Credit Union announced Wednesday it is making an outright gift of $215,000 to need-based scholarships at UW-Madison. "I think everyone knows that need-based financial aid is one of my highest priorities," UW-Madison Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin said during a Wednesday press conference at the Mechanical Engineering building to announce the gift...

"UW, credit union partner to boost need-based aid," Badger Herald, Oct. 2.

The University of Wisconsin could receive nearly $1 million for need-based scholarships within the next several years as a result of the combined efforts of the University of Wisconsin Credit Union and the UW Foundation. UWCU announced Wednesday it would donate $215,000 to the university and would also match additional member donations up to $215,000 through the end of December 2008. The UW Foundation agreed to then double the amount UWCU raises...

"Kindschi to lead UW-Extension entrepreneurship division," Business Journal of Milwaukee, Oct. 1.

Kim Kindschi has been named the new executive director of the University of Wisconsin-Extension’s Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, effective Oct. 15. The division is responsible for assisting start-up and existing businesses in Wisconsin and its programs include the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (WEN), and the Small Business Development Centers network...

State

"Stem cells not an issue in race," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 2.

Gov. Jim Doyle made a bold and reassuring statement in front of stem cell scientists from around the world last week in Madison. Doyle declared the political fight on stem cell research over in Wisconsin...

"Eau Claire boasts improved economy," Spectator, Oct. 2.

Eau Claire has something to brag about - and it's not the number of bars on Water Street or the temperature on the footbridge. The city's economy was ranked best in the state and 56th among 124 small metropolitan areas nationally this year, according to an economic report released earlier this month by the Milken Institute, a nonpartisan economic think tank in California...

National

"Bank limits fund access by colleges, inciting fears," New York Times, Oct. 2.

In a move suggesting how the credit crisis could disrupt American higher education, Wachovia Bank has limited the access of nearly 1,000 colleges to $9.3 billion the bank has held for them in a short-term investment fund, raising worries on some campuses about meeting payrolls and other obligations...

"Trickle-down economic duress," Inside Higher Ed, Oct. 2.

...This week saw some of the first tangible signs that the broader turmoil in the financial credit markets is having a direct effect on colleges and universities, notably the restrictions placed on the availability of money from the Common Fund for Short Term Investments, in which about 900 colleges store some of their financial assets...
