"Ernst & Young donates $840,000 to University of Wisconsin-Madison," Earth Times, Sept. 25.

The professionals of Ernst & Young LLP, together with the Ernst & Young Foundation, have announced a donation of $840,000 to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The donation will be used to create a new Accounting Student Computer Lab in the School of Business and complete the funding of the Ernst & Young endowed chair in the Accounting department...

A science historian at UW-Madison has been named interim director of the University's Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. Gregg Mitman, 47, is a professor of history of science, medical history, science and technology studies and environmental studies...

"River Watch still going strong," La Crosse Tribune, Sept. 25.

...For nearly two years, student volunteers have been an extra set of eyes along the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown La Crosse as part of Operation: River Watch. The student-led initiative is a partnership with La Crosse police to patrol the riverfront that started in October 2006 after the drowning death of UW-L student Lucas Homan, the eighth college-age male to drown in an area river in the past decade...

"Campuses share academic assets to boost learning," Badger Herald, Sept. 25.

Doctoral students will now have the opportunity to use resources and simultaneously attend classes at the Madison and Milwaukee campuses of the University of Wisconsin System, as a result of a new “Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures” collaboration between the universities...

"Campus diversity still lacking," Editorial, Daily Cardinal, Sept. 25.

...Yet, 2007 enrollment statistics paint an entirely different picture. Caucasian non-Hispanics comprise over 87 percent of the student body. The total percentage of minority students only increased 1.3 percentage points from 2006 and overall enrollment numbers have since increased. If university officials intend to truly improve the campus community's diversity, they first must admit the failures of Plan 2008 and go back to the drawing board...

"Funds in place, UW-EC can begin imagining new student center," Leader-Telegram, Sept. 25.

A revamped student center at UW-Eau Claire costing nearly $50 million is scheduled to open its doors by the end of 2012. Before that can happen, a few small matters need to be ironed out, namely what the structure will look like, where it will be built, and if the project will involve construction of a new building or a major remodeling of the university's 49-year-old Davies Center...

"UW-L faculty, staff show support for large academic endeavor," La Crosse Tribune, Sept. 25.

...About 37 percent of UW-L’s faculty and staff have given a total of about $625,000 to Centennial Campaign, which includes six major initiatives: the academic building, the annual fund, faculty awards and development, scholarships, the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex and undergraduate research, said Al Trapp, vice president of the UW-L Foundation. That campaign, which seeks to raise $40 million, will run though June 2012...

...The idea of moving in with a complete stranger can be an intimidating event for people, but there is, for the most part, no escaping that situation as an incoming freshman at UW-Platteville. The goal is for people to meet someone new and different from themselves, and also how to deal with those differences in a positive way...

"The complex mandate of a chief diversity officer," Column, Chronicle of Higher Education, Sept. 25.

Perhaps more than any other top campus administrator, the chief diversity officer is a lightning rod for criticism. Of course, some people simply oppose efforts to increase access, equity, multiculturalism, and inclusion. But even people committed to diversity can object to the presence of these officers...(Co-author is Damon A.
