"Wisconsin's lag in funding higher education increases," Wisconsin State Journal, Sept. 23.

Wisconsin has lagged behind every other state but one in providing funding increases for higher education over the past five years, according to a report this week by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance...

"Report: Growth in UW funding trails others," Associated Press, Sept. 23.

A new report shows that state spending on the University of Wisconsin System has trailed inflation and overall state spending. The report released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance shows that between 1983 and 2007 state funding for UW nearly doubled. But in that time, state aid and tax credits for primary and secondary schools more than tripled. Overall state spending was up more than 200 percent and inflation went up 115 percent...

"College students increasingly seek mental health counseling," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 23.

...Moore is one of a growing number of students seeking help for increasingly severe psychological problems at a time when resources are stretched thin. A UW System audit found that the number of students receiving counseling increased 22% on average at four-year institutions from 2002-'03 to 2006-'07, while the number of counselors remained about the same...

"Experts examine funding trend," Badger Herald, Sept. 24.

Scholars presented findings and research about the ups and downs of an increasingly volatile pattern of state funding for higher education at the University of Wisconsin Tuesday. Hosted by the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Higher Education, the annual forum invited scholars to share research concerning the relationship between state budget processes and higher education funding...

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh received a grant from the National Science Foundation to support students in the College of Nursing's' Alternative Careers in Teaching program...

Longtime UW-River Falls Public Affairs Director Mark Kinders will retire from his position in November, according to UW-RF Interim Chancellor Connie Foster...

Smokers will now be expected to stand at least 25 feet away from all building entrances on campus due to a new ban implemented by the university to reduce the amount of people being exposed to cigarette smoke...

When art student Sarah Muehlbauer began work last spring on a wax-paper dress in an experimental textile class at UW-Madison, little did she know it would end up at the Smithsonian - and earn her a $20,000 cash prize...

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton is making stops in Superior and Ashland today to encourage northern Wisconsin ninth graders to sign the Wisconsin Covenant...

"MATC offers emergency loans after Edamerica delays payments," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 23.

More than 100 Milwaukee Area Technical College students will be offered emergency loans from the school because a private student lender doesn't have the cash to provide loans on time...

"Midcareer adults boost enrollment at some technical colleges," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 23.

...Blackhawk (Technical College in Janesville) is the most extreme example of a surge of midcareer adults and displaced workers returning to school for retraining during an economic downturn. Full-time enrollment at Blackhawk is up an estimated 20.7% this fall, in part because of downsizing at General Motors Corp. and in the auto industry. Statewide, enrollment projections for the Wisconsin Technical College System are up 3.2% - even more than expected...

"Government, colleges work to cater to veterans under new GI Bill," Chronicle of Higher Education, Sept. 24.

With less than a year remaining until the new GI Bill goes into effect, the federal government is rushing to execute the measure while educating veterans about changes in their tuition benefits...

"Administration's $700-billion bank bailout could aid student lenders," Chronicle of Higher Education, Sept. 24.

The Bush administration, in asking Congress for a $700-billion bailout of the banking industry, has proposed including authority to help struggling student-loan providers in ways that go beyond the financial-rescue provisions approved by Congress this year...

"Emergency overload," Inside Higher Ed, Sept. 24.

...The new legislation, which passed the House of Representatives on an expedited basis last week and may be "hotlined" in the Senate to allow quick passage without debate, would require all postsecondary institutions to "assess campus safety on an annual basis" and "develop an emergency response plan to prepare for emergency situations, including natural disasters, active shooter situations, and terrorist attacks," according to a news release from its House sponsor, Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.)...
