Two anonymous donors have given $20 million to UW-Madison's School of Music for building two performing venues in a prominent campus location, next to the Chazen Museum of Art and three blocks north of the Kohl Center, by early 2013...

Two anonymous donors have made a commitment of $20 million in support of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music’s future Performance Center, officials said...

The idea to give Wisconsin high school graduates $175 million in grants to go to college was born from a snippet in the newspaper, said Tashia Morgridge during a speech at Monona Terrace on Tuesday night...

"$1 million in missing UW student refund checks," WKOW-TV, Sept. 16.

UW-Madison officials are trying to track down as much as $1.6 million in missing student refund checks, which were processed by a Milwaukee vendor and were intended for mailing from a Milwaukee post office last month. In the meantime, UW-Madison officials said the hundreds of students affected by the missing checks were being given the opportunity to receive zero-interest, short-term loans to tide them over...

College Republicans and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse officials are at odds over a 3,000-flag campus memorial to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in which some flags are arranged in the shape of a cross...

"New UW Assistant Dean working strictly with student veterans," WKOW-TV, Sept. 16.

The UW has filled a new position aimed at helping war vets transition back to student life. John Bechtol is UW's new assistant dean for veterans and ombuds services. He will be in charge of about 500 student-veterans on campus along with more than 200 ROTC cadets...

"Crime spree continues with 2 more incidents Monday night," Badger Herald, Sept. 17.

A recent surge in violent crimes this fall, including two Monday night, continue to stretch the resources of the Madison Police Department’s crime investigations unit. Just after midnight Tuesday morning, a 23-year-old male was mugged and assaulted on the 100 block of West Gilman Street. Just three hours earlier Monday night, a different man was attacked by six juveniles on the 200 block of North Hamilton Street...

Students familiar with University of Wisconsin - La Crosse's Growth, Quality, and Access plan know that now is an exciting time to attend this university. And with the new stadium project moving along ahead of schedule, groundbreaking for a massive new academic building planned for next spring, and new student housing also being designed, those in charge of finding money to fund the projects have had their hands full...

The body of a UW-Whitewater freshman was found Monday in Calvary Cemetery...The cause of death has initially been ruled as death by asphyxiation, according to an autopsy conducted Tuesday morning...

As UW-Whitewater welcomes one of the largest freshman classes, it is also greeting its largest number of international students in its history. With 131 students from all around the globe, the 2008-09 school year is shaping up to be a diverse one for the university...

"Pennsylvania first to ban smoking at all state universities," USA Today, Sept. 17.

With virtually no warning, smoking at 14 of Pennsylvania's state-owned universities has been banned anywhere on campus — even outdoors...The move to make campuses systemwide completely smoke-free is apparently unprecedented among state-funded Pennsylvania universities, but the American Lung Association said more than 130 colleges and universities across the country have such policies...

"House moves to protect student loans," USA Today, Sept. 16.

Federal authority to protect student borrowers from getting squeezed by the current credit crunch would be extended a year under legislation passed by the House on Monday. The measure, approved 368-4, continues the secretary of education's power to purchase loans from lenders in the federal guaranteed loan program when lenders are unable to meed demand. The current authority expires in July...

"GWU adds ethical focus to business grad school," Washington Post, Sept. 16.

George Washington University Business School is overhauling its graduate program this year and says it is taking a chance: Will future MBAs value a new emphasis on ethics, or are they in it only for the money? The school will announce today that it is transforming its curriculum with its current first-year graduate students, emphasizing ethical business practices and globalization. Such trends have been growing throughout U.S. business education...

"UCF ranks among top 10 U.S. universities in 'Patent Scorecard'," Orlando Business Journal, Sept 17.

The University of Central Florida was listed among research universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University in the top 10 of the 2008 “Patent Scorecard,” which ranks technology innovations from patents. Jumping from 21st to eighth, UCF surpassed Harvard University and the University of Wisconsin in the top 10...

"More universities cut some health-care costs and offer partner benefits," Chronicle of Higher Education, Sept. 17.

The number of colleges offering health-care benefits to employees' domestic partners has gone up for the third consecutive year, while more institutions are asking employees to pay a share of their insurance costs or turning to other cost-saving options, according to a survey by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources...
