Last week, the U-W Board of Regents unanimously passed a budget request that will ask for more taxpayer support of The Growth Agenda. After eight, Joy Cardin talks with UW-System President Kevin Reilly about The Growth Agenda... and why he says it's vital for creating strong communities...

"UW diversity effort needs audit," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 28.

...Such an audit could clearly define how much is being spent on what. An audit could clarify which efforts seem to be working and which might not be. It could flag efforts that cost too much to justify their results...

On Campus

"Largest freshman class settling in at UWGB," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Aug. 29.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus got a wake-up call Thursday as members of its largest freshman class moved into the dorms...

"UWO surge promising, challenging," Editorial, Oshkosh Northwestern , Aug. 29.

...Over the last eight years, UWO has grown by about 1,000 students, from 11,700 to 12,700 projected at this semester's kick-off. The number is projected to grow to 13,500 by 2012, according to the university. And, as it grows, our campus and community get smarter – about 4 percent of the 2008-09 freshman UWO class completed high school in the top quartile of their class, improving the mean, incoming ACT score for UWO to 22.6, up from 22.4. Not too shabby...

"It's a settled question," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 28.

A group of university presidents, including David Joyce of Ripon College, have signed the Amethyst Initiative, which has among its goals reopening debate over the nation’s drinking age. Their move is well-intended: Alcohol is frequently abused at college campuses around the country — including the University of Wisconsin-Madison and other UW campuses. Kids are hurting themselves. But this is actually a well-settled question...
