"Doyle right to talk with UW finalists," Editorial, Oshkosh Northwestern, Aug. 5.

Gov. Jim Doyle took some heat last week because it was reported that he had met with the finalists for the University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor position...That the governor had phone interviews of about a half-hour with each of the four finalists is hardly evidence of gerrymandering...

"UW-Madison gets federal grant for stem cell work," Associated Press, Aug. 5.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is getting an $8.9 million federal grant to continue its human embryonic stem cell research...

"University of Wisconsin researchers get grant to study stem cells," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 4.

A team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been awarded an $8.9 million federal grant to investigate the fundamental power of embryonic stem cells and cells that have been reprogrammed to an embryonic state: their ability to become any cell in the human body...

"UW-Madison granted nearly $9 million for stem cell research," Capital Times, Aug. 4.

The University of Wisconsin has been awarded a prestigious $8.9 million grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to continue its pioneering work with human embryonic stem cell research...

"University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee unveils 8 possible dorm sites," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 5.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Real Estate Foundation on Monday released a list of eight proposed locations for the school’s new dorm in Milwaukee’s east side and Riverwest neighborhoods, with sites as far west as the Holton Terrace apartments and as far east as the old Prospect Mall...

"City hoping UW incubator can spark East Rail Corridor," Capital Times, Aug. 4.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz meet for lunch from time to time to keep each other informed about all that's going on around town. It was about a year ago during one of these get-togethers that Wiley talked about his hopes of developing an urban research park -- targeting high-technology entrepreneurs -- on East Washington Avenue...

"Research Park's new urban campus hopes to draw high-tech firms," WisBusiness.com, Aug. 4.

Most of the 115 businesses in the University Research Park on the Capital City’s west side are biotech companies that require wet labs for their ongoing experiments and product development. But in the research’s park urban expansion in the former Marquip Building at 1245 E. Washington Ave., the targets for the 10 new incubator suites in the former manufacturing site will be high-tech entrepreneurs working in the areas of information technology, engineering, medical devices and computer sciences...

A group of students got ready to head back to school last week, but their preparations had nothing to do with school supplies...

"Doyle's goal for job cuts is unmet," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 5.

When he first ran for governor in 2002, Jim Doyle said his goal would be to shrink the size of the state work force to 1987 levels over the course of four budgets - amounting to about 10,000 jobs in eight years. But nearly three-quarters of the way through his first two terms, the number of state government jobs will have fallen by 2,730 jobs by the end of the budget that expires June 30, 2009...

"Court strikes down 'overbroad' harassment policy," Inside Higher Ed, Aug. 5.

A federal appeals court on Monday declared Temple University’s now-abandoned sexual harassment policy unconstitutional — and it did so in a way that legal experts agree could make it much more difficult for colleges and universities to defend nondiscrimination policies that limit the speech of students...

"Keys to hiring women in science," Inside Higher Ed, Aug. 5.

...Two sociologists who want to push the discussion beyond anecdotes and individual preferences think they have found evidence of steps that do make a difference in the recruitment of women for science faculty jobs...
