Damon Williams, who has been named vice provost for diversity and climate, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's chief diversity officer, is excited about coming to Madison. "The University of Wisconsin has a history of doing this kind of work (with diversity) going back several decades," Williams said, "and that's rare."...

An administrative internship project between the School District and the University of Wisconsin-Madison will go into effect at the start of the upcoming school year. Two intern administrators pursuing certification and licensure at the administrative level will join the district in a project designed to be mutually beneficial for the interns and the district...

"Jessica Doyle speaks at UW-Sheboygan pre-college program," Sheboygan Press, July 24.

...Doyle paid a midday visit to a summer pre-college program conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan for middle-schoolers, many of whom had never set foot on a college campus. The annual free program concludes its two-week run today. Doyle used the opportunity to promote the Wisconsin Covenant to the older students, telling them that they have until Sept. 30 of their freshman year of high school to sign it...

"In recruitment wars, a new front," Inside Higher Ed, July 24.

...And so opens a new front in the faculty recruitment wars. While the stagnant economy has hit some universities hard, others — including Ohio State — have managed to avoid major budget cuts. That’s created an opportunity for the “haves” to poach faculty from the “have nots,” and some universities stand to lose a lot in this latest skirmish...

"The price of an education is likely to be debt," USA Today, July 24.

...The American Association of Community Colleges, which represents 1,200 two-year institutions, says most colleges that don't participate in the (federal loan) program base the decision on "overwhelming concern for the serious consequences of debt and default for students." Of particular concern are students who take remedial classes, for whom dropout — and default — rates tend to be higher...

"Financial aid limits can be roadblock," USA Today, July 24.

Community colleges pride themselves on being the best bargains in higher education, yet affordability remains a barrier for many low- and moderate-income students...

"Higher-education price index rises 3.6 percent, trailing consumer price index," Chronicle of Higher Education, July 24.

The Higher Education Price Index, a widely used measure of colleges' inflation costs, rose by 3.6 percent for the 2008 fiscal year that ended on June 30. But even as they heralded the good news of that moderate increase, experts at the Commonfund Institute who maintain the index noted that broader economic trends could portend higher costs for colleges in the months to come...

With just over a week remaining until the August recess, members of Congress and their aides are scrambling to complete work on a long-delayed bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Act. Negotiations are now centered on just two issues: Should states be penalized for cutting their higher-education budgets? And should Congress create one new program for black colleges, or two?...
