What are we to make of the recent recruiting problems in southeastern Wisconsin? The obvious lesson is that people weren't doing what they ought. Fortunately there are easy solutions...

"UW-RF gaining ground on turning campus 'green'," River Falls Journal, July 3.

Call it "walking the talk." As UW-River Falls assists and advises business, industry, local governments, nonprofit organizations and communities to pursue their objectives in sustainable community development, the campus must lead by example in its own sustainability efforts...

"Some UW-EC students to be housed in hotel," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, July 3.

As has happened in 10 of the past 13 years, a number of UW-Eau Claire students will be housed in an area hotel this fall. The university can accommodate 3,905 students in its residence halls, and requests for housing have exceeded that number by about 130, said Charles Major, UW-Eau Claire director of housing and residence life...

"UW student dies; no foul play suspected," Capital Times, July 7.

A University of Wisconsin student was pronounced dead Sunday night after campus police responded to an emergency call from an Eagle Heights apartment.

"Islet-cell transplants at UW Hospital help diabetes patients," Wisconsin State Journal, July 7.

...Diabetes patients with a severe form of the disease, they have frequently faced life-threatening episodes of low blood sugar. But at UW Hospital, they received islet-cell transplants that have greatly improved their conditions. Doctors infused insulin-producing cells from donor pancreases into their livers...

"Link found between cholesterol, memory," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 5.

..."This study begins to say that HDL may be the most important cholesterol and may be protective in the brain," said Sager, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health...

"A sea of change: UW scientist pins mass extinctions on ocean events," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 7.

...New research from University of Wisconsin-Madison geologist Shanan Peters indicates that fluxes in ancient sea levels and sediments were the primary cause of the world's periodic extinctions, which could have important implications for life in our oceans today...

"'Good' is no excuse to sit back and relax," Column, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 6.

...Wisconsin looks pretty good in two recent reports on the state of its technology economy, but neither the Battelle Bioscience Initiatives 2008 report nor the Milken Institute’s State Technology and Science Index is an excuse to sit back and relax. In the competitive world of tech-based economic development, Wisconsin must strive to become great -- or risk being left behind...

"Health care, Uw take budget hits," Associated Press, July 4.

...The University of Wisconsin System will also be hit with $25 million in additional spending cuts, with at least some affecting UW-Madison, a System spokesman said. The news came as state officials outlined Thursday how they would divide $270 million in spending cuts across a number of state agencies to balance the current two-year budget...

"Doyle orders more state budget cuts," Associated Press, July 3.

Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday ordered more than a dozen state agencies to cut millions of dollars in spending to help close Wisconsin's budget deficit...

"Help college students with child care," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, July 7.

...The unfortunate and misguided conundrum is that the state will subsidize child care for full-time college students -- but only for two years -- while low-income parents working full time can receive unlimited day care assistance...

"Spending on government debt increases in Wisconsin," Wisconsin Public Radio, July 3.

2006 was the first year in decades that Wisconsin fell out of the top ten highest taxed states in the nation, but a new report shows Wisconsin has joined another top ten list when it comes to how much it spends paying off debt...

"State tightens requirements for charter school teachers," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 5.

Depending on your view, new steps by the state Department of Public Instruction will either assure that charter schools across the state have quality teachers, or threaten some of the best things going on in those schools...

"Private colleges play key role," Column, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 6.

I am optimistic about the future of Milwaukee with the recent decision by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents to establish the School of Public Health and the School of Freshwater Sciences at UW-Milwaukee...

National

"The '60s begin to fade as liberal professors retire," New York Times, July 3.

...Baby boomers, hired in large numbers during a huge expansion in higher education that continued into the '70s, are being replaced by younger professors who many of the nearly 50 academics interviewed by The New York Times believe are different from their predecessors -- less ideologically polarized and more politically moderate...

"Lenders'-eye view of the credit crisis," Inside Higher Ed, July 7.

Given the goings-on of the past few months, it only makes sense that the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators kicked off its annual meeting in Orlando Sunday with a discussion of the student loan credit crunch that has shaken the financial aid industry of late...
