"Chancellor candidate Tim Mulcahy spent 20 years at UW-Madison," Wisconsin State Journal, May 14.

Tim Mulcahy, vice president for research at the University of Minnesota, participated in a public reception on the UW-Madison campus yesterday where he stressed his belief in equal support for all areas of study; Mulcahy is one of four finalists for the position of UW-Madison chancellor.

Both the Senate and Assembly have passed a bill aimed at solving the state's budget shortfall; Doyle is expected to issue vetoes within days.

Waukesha County Technical College has been approved to raise area property taxes 3.8 percent, which will be an increase of more than $2 million next year.

Chippewa Valley Technical College is not planning to increase its enrollment despite growing waiting lists for a number of popular programs; the move is a reaction to the slowing economy and limited property tax growth .

UW-Marathon County has been approved to acquire a number of properties to expand the campus.

"Idea takes business-plan prize," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, May 13.

Ryan McKone, a UW-Stout student, took first place in the fourth annual Xcel Energy Young Entrepreneurs' Written Business Plan Competition; his plan featured a restaurant that would serve local foods and a LEED-Commercial Interior certification.

National

"New ads encourage high-school students to sign up for tough courses," Chronicle of Higher Education, May 14.

KnowHow2Go will soon have a series of public-service announcements aimed at encouraging low-income high school students to take challenging courses.

"As campuses become more diverse, colleges must alter fund-raising approaches, report says," Chronicle of Higher Education, May 15.

According to a recent report from the consulting firm Changing Our World, universities will face challenges, such as plateaued enrollments and diverse student bodies, that will affect private giving. (paid subscription only)

A study released today by the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government reveals vast differences between how states support and use community colleges; Wisconsin currently lands 25th when ranked by full-time enrollment and "tuition burden."
