UW-Madison student group Student Action Coalition is pressuring Chancellor Wiley to address worker rights violations in Adidas, which contracts with the campus to provide athletic uniforms and equipment.

The Kachel family's gift will provide for the installation of a synthetic surface and other improvements to the stadium, as part of an overall renovation of the campus' sports facility.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley spoke at the UW-Marathon County commencement ceremony, calling on the state to renew commitment to higher education as a vital component to the state's future.

Workers broke ground for the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery building with Gov. Jim Doyle, UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, and UW alumni John and Tasha Morgridge present.

A new program at UW-La Crosse will give students a chance to reflect on their behavior and create their own plans for change; the program is called Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students.

"UW's SAFEwalk effort short on staff," Wisconsin State Journal, May 2.

After 11 student workers quit, the program is also adjusting to new management.

UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff, and other university-related groups, can sign up for Wisc-Alerts, a free program that will text message emergency notifications.

"High school students from Milwaukee, A-F hit UWSP campus," Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, May 3.

High school students from Adams-Friendship and Milwaukee Vincent visited UW-Stevens Point to get a clearer picture of college life.

"UW-RF to receive re-accreditation recommendation," River Falls Journal, May 1.

The Higher Learning Commission will recommend that UW-River Falls be re-accredited for 10 years, the maximum length possible for re-accreditation.

"Eau Claire hosts surveys," Eau Claire Spectator, May 5.

UW-Eau Claire is a pilot site for surveys, designed by the Minnesota Institute for Public Health, to gauge the drinking culture on university campuses nationwide.

UW-River Falls is the only four-year UW campus that is protected by safety officers rather than certified police officers; the campus is evaluating its campus security needs.

"Hiring rates for adjunct professors increase rapidly," River Falls Student Voice, May 2.

UW-River Fall is part of a growing trend that has universities hiring adjunct professors to accommodate growing enrollment numbers.

"Distance learning gains popularity at UWS," Superior Daily Telegram, May 3.

The UW System Accountability Report shows that the distance learning program at UW-Superior has grown 536 percent in number of classes and more than 658 percent in number of students.

State

Universities in western Wisconsin are working to teach students the value of academic and professional honesty.

"FVTC names new president," Northwestern, May 3.

Dr. Susan May will become Fox Valley Technical College's president on July 1.

"MSTC develops 3 renewable energy degrees," Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, May 5.

This fall, Mid-State Technical College will add programs in biorefinery technology, renewable electricity technician training, and renewable thermal energy technician training.

"Was politics a factor in Sass' hiring decisions?," Wisconsin State Journal, May 4.

Megan Perkins was recently hired as the director of the state's college savings program known as EdVest and Tomorrow's Scholar.
