An editorial about the state's responsibility to provide adequate compensation for UW leaders in the wake of UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells' announcement that he is a finalist for the position of chancellor for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

"Report: Things looking good in UW System," Eau Claire Spectator, May 1.

The UW System accountability report, "Achieving Excellence," showed a 65 percent graduation rate for UW System students, which is four points higher than the national average.

On Campus

"UW names interim Green Bay chancellor," Badger Herald, May 2.

UW System President Kevin Reilly announced that he nominates David J. Ward as interim chancellor for UW-Green Bay; final appointment is pending the Board of Regents approval.

Four finalists were recently announced for the position of UW-Parkside's chancellor; public forums will be held next week on the campus.

UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Wells is one of three finalists for system chancellor for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

UW-Madison's WiscAlerts-Text system is currently enrolling users to begin the use of the service this fall.

Safewalk patrols will be limited on the UW-Madison campus following many Safewalk workers walking off the job in protest of alleged bad management.

"UWSP anti-abortion display sparks controversy," Stevens Point Journal, May 2.

A UW-Stevens Point student organization encountered opposition from fellow students over an exhibit displayed on campus against abortion.

"University, Point should learn something from losing the Rams," Editorial, Stevens Point Journal, May 2.

UW-Stevens Point was turned down to host the Rams' training camp because the campus does not have an all-weather field; campus officials should renovate the field, so the facility can become a valuable asset to the campus and the community.

State

"Doyle: Expect roadwork delays, unpaid bills if no budget deal is reached," Wisconsin State Journal, May 1.

Gov. Doyle and state legislators continue meeting to attempt to resolve the budget shortfall; so far, long-term solutions to the budget problems remain out of reach while policy makers have focused on short-term ideas like borrowing more money or delaying payments.

"Marian college becomes university," Fond du Lac Reporter, May 2.

The Marion College Board of Trustees passed a resolution to change the name of the college to Marian University.

National

"Congress passes student loan bill," USA Today, May 1.

Congress passed a bill that would increase limits on the amount borrowers can receive in federally subsidized student loans.
