"UW gets $1.3 million Gates grant for flu study," Capital Times, March 26.

UW-Madison received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundationa to conduct a study that will seek to prevent a flu pandemic; the study will be made in collaboration with a Maryland-based research corporation.

UW-Stevens Point has developed a new online emergency response system, drawing from the proposals set forth in the UW System President's 2007 Commission on University Security and the Governor's Task Force on Campus Security.

State

"Senate approves its budget repair plan," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, March 26.

The state Senate passed a repair bill that includes taxing the profits of parent companies who have subsidiaries in the state.

College professors, including a psychology professor from UW-Madison, are making the case that emerging technologies like computer games can be useful tools for learning.

A recent panel of scholars gathered by the American Educational Research Association found that as institutions rely more heavily on SAT scores, minorities will be less likely to enroll in higher education.
