On Campus

"Richard Wells: newsmaker of 2007," Oshkosh Northwestern, Jan. 1.

UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells was chosen 2007's Newsmaker of the Year by the Oshkosh Northwestern.

"UWSP professor writes book about Plato, Rousseau," Marshfield News Herald, Dec. 29.

David Williams, associate professor at UW-Stevens Point, has written a book discussing the philosophical influence of Plato on Rousseau.

"Year in preview: Area higher education plans to expand," La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 24.

UW-La Crosse, along with the city's two other higher education institutions, will see growth in 2008.

"UWGB security review focuses on communication, student aid," Green Bay Press Gazette, Dec. 29.

In the wake of the Virgina Tech tragedy, UW-Green Bay officials plan to increase their focus on student mental health and communication to ensure campus safety.

"UW research center never happened," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 1.

A once anticipated international center at UW-Madison to study the effects of chemicals mimicking hormones never went past the drawing board.

Bill McConkey, UW-Oshkosh professor, filed a lawsuit in July in an attempt to overturn the state's ban on gay marriage and civil unions.

The Stout Technology Park, a partnership with UW-Stout, the city of Menomonie, and Xcel Energy, hopes to sell six acres per year but will not estimate the number of jobs that the park may bring to the area.

Don Guay, an assistant professor at UW-Stevens Point, will research the production of biofuel thanks to a grant from Brookfield-based, Hydrite Chemical Company.

UW-Madison, along with Edgewood College, may offer doctorate degrees in the place of master's degree programs for specialty nurses.

"UW-Madison officials pleased more students want flu vaccine," Wisconsin State Journal, Dec. 25.

UW-Madison officials hope that the increased number of vaccinated students will limit the spreading of influenza to other students.

"UWM Upward Bound director fights change," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dec. 22.

Donal Singleton, director of UW-Milwaukee's Upward Bound program believes there may have been a flawed study incorporated into the Upward Bound application process.

National

A study from UCLA finds that there has been an increase in the number of students seeking out spirituality.
