"Economic ideas sought for state: UW System initiative reaches out to find ways to strengthen future," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 15.

As part of its Advantage Wisconsin initiative, the UW System will hold listening sessions in dozens of counties around the state on Nov. 27 to seek input on how the university can impact the state most positively - producing more graduates, contributing to stronger communities, and helping to create high-paying, private sector jobs.

On Campus

"Proposed segregated fee changes draw criticism," Eau Claire Spectator, Nov. 15.

Some UW-Madison students are concerned proposed change to the segregated fees policy would limit student control of how the money is spent; the president of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, who is a member of the committee proposing the changes, disagrees with this interpretation.

"UWEC reaches for ethnic, racial equity," Eau Claire Spectator, Nov. 15.

In 2008, UW-Eau Claire will join the "Equity Scorecard" initiative, a UW System-wide program that helps participating campuses evaluate and achieve racial and ethnic equity on their campuses.

"Noose not linked to hate crime," Stevens Point Journal, Nov. 15.

After conducting an investigation, university officials at UW-Stevens Point found no intent of a hate crime.

State

"Group forms plan to plug brain drain," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 15.

A non-partisan state coalition called Competitive Wisconsin, Inc. prioritizes education and expanded research and development as part of its long-term economic redevelopment plan for the state; in developing its recommendations, the group used research conducted by UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

"Emissions pact wins backing," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 15.

Gov. Doyle was one of six Midwestern governors, along with the premier of Manitoba, to sign a pact to reduce emissions and increase use of renewable energy, with a goal of putting pressure on the federal government to do the same.
