"UW committee discusses changes to seg fee policy," Channel 3000, Nov. 8.

A UW System Board of Regents committee is preparing to vote on recommended changes to policies regulating how student segregated fees are spent; some students are concerned the recommendations will jeopardize their ability to help make those decisions.

Universities may one day be required to test college students for proficiency in core competencies, such as communication skills and critical thinking, to further demonstrate university accountability to the public, students, and the government; at its November meeting today, the Board of Regents will hear about UW System's participation in a national program, called the Voluntary System of Accountability, which involves developing voluntary, experimental exams for some freshmen and seniors, in addition to providing consistent, standardized student data to assist with college decisions.

"UW, state found in violation of Clean Air Act over Charter Street plant," Associated Press, Nov. 8.

A federal judge ruled that a coal power plant, built in 1954 on the UW-Madison campus, is in violation of the federal Clean Air Act and needs pollution controls installed; campus officials pledge to lessen the plant's environmental impact and improve its efficiency, which may cost millions of dollars.
