State Budget

"UW-Stevens Point makes plans to pay back disparity," Badger Herald, Nov. 6.

With the 2007-09 state budget passed, UW-Stevens Point officials are making plans to cover the campus's $1 million share of a $25 million total budget lapse for the UW System with as little impact on student instruction as possible; the money needs to be paid back to the state by 2009.

On Campus

"Master plan moves ahead," Stevens Point Journal, Nov. 6.

UW-Stevens Point's 18-year master plan, revised from earlier meetings with the City Planning Commission, was largely met with approval by commission members; it will be presented to the City Council for consideration later this month.

"UWSP's Wausau center aims for master's," Wausau Daily Herald, Nov. 6.

UW-Stevens Point opened a new building in Wausau last month designed to expand continuing education opportunities in leadership and management for the region; the campus hopes to offer two master's degree programs through the center, one of which will be in partnership with UW-Oshkosh.

"Center of attention: UW's Fluno Center gains international acclaim for food, accommodations," Capital Times, Nov. 6.

UW-Madison's Fluno Center, an amenity-rich meeting center for business executives and adult education, has received top marks for its food and accommodations by the London-based Financial Times for the last several years; it is available for use by UW-Madison students, faculty, and alumni.

"UWO needs to raise $8.6M for new academic building," Oshkosh Advance Titan, Nov. 5.

UW-Oshkosh is beginning a capital campaign to raise donations by spring to go toward a new academic building, which received support in the recently passed state budget.

"USA team medals at Computing Olympiad," Racine Journal Times, Nov. 6.

Don Piele, an emeritus professor of mathematics at UW-Parkside, was the director of the medal-winning USA Computing Olympiad team, which included the best high school student computer programmers in the country; more than 70 countries participated in the19th International Olympiad in Informatics event.

State

"Wisconsin Covenant modified," WKOW, Nov. 6.

A UW-Madison researcher takes issue with a language change the governor made to the Wisconsin Covenant program, saying that it should continue to explicitly prioritize educational financial aid for low-income students; the governor, who recently announced a foundation to help fund the Covenant program, wants the program to inspire all students to attend college, regardless of background.

National

"Beyond rankings: A new way to look for a college," USA TODAY, Nov. 5.

Since 2000, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has tried to provide a meaningful alternative to traditional rankings of colleges and universities, focusing more on measuring student engagement in the university community rather than on criteria such as college entrance exam scores; similar initiatives led by nonprofit higher education groups are underway.
