State Budget

"State budget gives UW campuses money to add students, researchers," Channel3000, Oct. 30.

The biennial budget allotted money for campus projects that will increase student enrollment and add faculty and staff members.

"UW-La Crosse drops plan to raise need-based aid and diversity," Chronicle of Higher Education, Oct. 30.

Plans to expand need-based student aid and hire 130 more faculty and staff with an increase in tuition has been withdrawn because the state Legislature did not include the campus' Growth and Access Agenda in the biennial budget.

UW-La Crosse has joined with the city in implementing a new emergency notification service; policy will be able to automate phone and text messages to any student who signs up for the program.

UW-Stout's apparel design and development program hosted a conference challenging high school and middle school students to make Halloween costumes out of paper bags; over 40 costumes were entered.

State

"Lawmakers try to get football on cable," Associated Press, Oct. 31.

Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the state legislature to help arbitrate disputes between cable companies and networks; the bill aims to make the Big Ten Network and NFL Network available on cable.

"Early Aid Could Lift College Aspirations," Inside Higher Education, Oct. 30.

Chancellor of the University of Texas System Mark Yudof argues that many high quality students from low-income families are less inclined to enroll in college because of uncertainty surrounding cost and financial aid; this problem could be alleviated by implementing an earlier timetable for rewarding financial aid.
