State Budget

"Solid ground in sight," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 19.

If a compromise budget cannot be reached in sufficient time, the Senate should vote to separately fund municipalities and K-12 schools so at least a portion of the state budget could be completed on time.

A lack of a state budget forced the State Building Commission to put a residence hall renovation project on the UW-Stevens Point campus on hold; the residence hall is in great need of upgrades to its ventilation system and windows, among other needed improvements.

"Sounding the alarm: Universities must be catalysts for economic growth," Column, Wisconsin Technology Council, Oct. 16.

This column suggests Wisconsin follow Maryland's example when funding higher education; Maryland's legislature and Governor have agreed to supply the state's public universities with a steady stream of revenue and have developed a "compact" to measure economic development outcomes.

On Campus

"University of Wisconsin-Madison officials had concerns about recruiting students for Doyle event," Associated Press, Oct. 18.

UW-Madison officials said despite their initial reservations about notifying students of a press event regarding financial aid, they did so because they were ultimately comfortable with the way the event was planned and carried out.
