State Budget

"Doyle warns shutdown possible," Associated Press, Oct. 17.

State officials issued warnings of possible shutdowns on UW System campuses and cutbacks in social services if a budget is not passed; UW System officials have said that without a budget, they may be forced to resort to service cuts and/or tuition increases.

The UW System is forced to consider some difficult options and changes if the state legislature continues to delay passing a budget.

UW-Milwaukee admitted a higher number of minority students, but fewer have enrolled for the fall, reflecting the competition between campuses for a rapidly growing pool of gifted minority applicants.

On Campus

"New UW-Madison center to meet growing demand for sleep studies," Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 17.

A new sleep study facility at UW-Madison opened underground and is equipped with new tools to gain a better understanding of sleep.

"Bialecki seeks room tax hike: Money would go toward UW-L stadium," La Crosse Tribune, Oct.17.

Onalaska's mayor proposed a city budget that includes a 0.5 percent tax increase on hotel rooms, with revenue going towards UW-La Crosse's new stadium.

"Gow pays for own inauguration ceremony," La Crosse Tribune, Oct. 17.

UW-La Crosse Chancellor Gow gave approximately $8,000 for his own inaugural ceremony to exemplify fiscal responsibility during the difficult budgeting process.

"Ex-UW-S dean Ray Hernandez dies at 59," The Sheboygan Press-Express, Oct.17.

Ray Hernandez, former dean for UW-Sheboygan, passed away Tuesday after a four-year fight against cancer; Hernandez was well respected and loved for his work both on campus and in the community.

"Students rally for control," Wausau Daily Herald, Oct. 17.

UW-Stevens Point students voice concerns over the Segregated Fee Policy Committee and request more oversight in the allocation of that money.
