State Budget

"Budget woes affecting student aid," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Oct. 9.

The number of UW System students waiting for state-funded financial aid in the form of the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant has increased by nearly 1,000 in the past month to 5,544 students; the WHEG's funding has been delayed as a result of the ongoing budget impasse.

"Budget problems could mean fewer freshmen," Wisconsin State Journal, Oct. 7.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley said one unfortunate option the campus could pursue if the UW System is not provided an adequate budget would be to decrease the size of next year's freshman class.

UW-Rock County's STEM program -- which aims to increase the number of college graduates in science, technology, engineering and math -- gets a "thumbs up" from the Gazette's editorial board for expanding the horizons of the region's students.

"UWSP biology department adds aquaculture minor," Stevens Point Journal, Oct. 9.

UW-Stevens Point has begun offering an aquaculture minor for students interested in advancing their career prospects in the field.

"UW-River Falls unveils growth plan and large-scale fund raising plan to Regents," RiverTowns.net, Oct. 9.

UW-River Falls will likely begin a significant capital campaign to raise funds for facilities, technology, scholarships and student initiatives sometime in the next 12 to 18 months.

"Applying to UW-Madison? Here's some advice," Column, Appleton Post-Crescent, Oct. 9.
